[mickey]

— the search for a new hobby continued. and, with people catching wind of the attempt, also came an endless list of suggestions from people throughout the district. go hiking. give gardening a try. start fishing more often. the list went on and on. some consisted of new projects to start on, seeing as mickey once always used the new projects as an opportunity to distract himself from the numbing static in his head. the suggestions of hobbies intrigued him, yes, but the idea of projects were more appealing to mick on that particular day.

”what is this, again?”
mick looked over his shoulder towards arlo, the young boy looking a bit apprehensive from where he stood beside the mill. arlo’s bewilderment was almost amusing, bringing a ghost of a fond smile to his lips. he stepped away from the tree, stepping back beside arlo. with a sigh, he crossed his arms as he answered, “a tire swing.” somewhere else for the kids of the district to play besides just the playground. gesturing for arlo to go to the swing, he urged, ”get in. i’ll push you.”

arlo smiled a bit to himself as he went to the swing, mickey walking with him.

Greenie was lucky to have found his hobbies from a young age. Archery and boating, parkour and singing — he was set for life with the things he loved the most. But, he knew he was lucky in the way he had so quickly found the things he loved and committed to them since. Most people could spend years trying to find what made them happy, and perhaps sometimes they would have to go through such disappointing trials and tests only to feel more disheartened once they’d give up.

He never wanted Mickey to lose hope at finding something that he’d love doing because sometimes the effort he put into searching for hobbies seemed like the only thing that was keeping him from shutting down most days, and that worried Green. He wanted so desperately to see Mick happy, but life could never be that simple, could it?

Wandering closer towards the mill, Green silently marvelled at the finished product of a tire swing. Something which had occupied Mick’s mind and for a good cause. The children would be ecstatic once they found out about this new play area. Green slowed to a stop to watch from nearby, smiling whilst he stood with his hands on his hips. Arlo seemed so quietly overjoyed to be pushed in the tire swing, a small moment in his day where he could just be a kid. ❝ This is good. ❞ Green hummed as he approached, leaning against a nearby tree before raising a brow towards Mick.

❝ Think it can fit two? ❞ He challenged light-heartedly, earning a scoffing laugh from Arlo. ❝ No! ❞ ❝ Hey, I think I could fit as well! ❞ Green laughed, eyes following Arlo as the child giggled to himself.

— growing up, mickey never really had the opportunity to find a hobby for himself. sheltered and protected from the darker parts of the world, his parents didn’t really see the point in giving him a hobby. not that it was the worst thing in the world for someone like mickey; he had always been too curious for his own good, too full of imagination as a kid that it was astonishing how much he’d dulled since then. he managed to keep himself busy playing around the house, finding small things to do to pass the time.

maybe nowadays  he deserved the chance to get to find a hobby, after being denied the opportunity for so long. a chance to find something to make him happy in his own company. maybe there was a part of him that held himself back, telling himself that he didn’t deserve it.

there was a ghost of a smile that momentarily appeared on his lips as he pushed the tire swing, glad to see arlo so overjoyed. the kids needed a new thing to do; having the same playset day after day probably grew old for some of them. maybe, he figured, this could keep them entertained for a while. hopefully other kids found as much joy with the swing as arlo did. “you think so?” he hummed as green approached, briefly turning his head to look towards his boyfriend.

vernon always knew how to make even the good moments that much better. rolling his eyes subtly, he exhaled a gentle breath before he challenged, “i’d like to see you try.”
