BEATEN AND BLISTERED / X / MARINE
« on: December 03, 2017, 03:52:39 PM »
He doesn't know why he let Pip convince him to stay. This place as a hellhole, filled with greenery and noise. He'd been used to something quieter, and the failing skeletons of old buildings had eventually become comforting. This place doesn't fill that same niche in his heart green, busy, kind of... Pretty. Not in the way that he likes, though. Grim has grown accustomed to the crumbling skeletons of old cities and all of their machines. Everything here is older than even that, in the strangest of ways, and he finds it unsettling. Not to mention the wildlife. He hates everything about this place, but at least some of that could be because he refuses to change his own patterns of behavior. The young man is still wearing the stiff fabrics he came to Northstar District in, though sweat has slicked down the short hairs at the base of his neck, and trickles down his shirt collar. Beautiful place, his ass. He doesn't know why Pip likes it.

It being a hellhole and all, he's not all that surprised when he finds someone losing their shit. It does startle him slightly that it's Marine, who had seemed so calm when he first showed up here. For a moment, Grim simply watches her move about with narrowed eyes, alarmed, amused, and curious at the same time. "World ending again, or is there something equally important going on that I'm missing?"

Marine came here because she'd heard rumors that this place was peaceful, and that sounded nice. Not needing to fight every minute of every day, not needing to deal with moving around constantly or babysitting kids. Peaceful? Nope, there was plenty of violence all around, though not as much groupmate-on-groupmate. No need to fight? Also no, though the fight was a bit different. Not moving around constantly? Well, the minute she arrived they moved, but now at least it seemed like they were gonna stay. And there were not nearly as many kids around, which she actually found herself a tad disappointed by.

Maybe there's a part of her that still hasn't registered the permanency of her new home, she's used to moving around every few weeks, so there's still some part of her that expects this place is only going to last so long. But it's not, and the conscious part of her knows it. Perhaps she thinks she'll be able to make it better, safer, more comfortable, even if what impact she'll have is actually limited.

It's fucking hot. She's been trying to ignore it, but she can't anymore. She's not Doc, she's not willing to die for her aesthetic, so the young woman ended up shedding her jacket (she's gotta go find clothes that are looser and not black), and now she's darting around the camp, trying and failing to find the dark article. Just because she's decided not to wear it in the heat doesn't mean she wants to lose it. Marine paused and narrowed her eyes. One of them took it. Why on God's green earth someone took her black leather jacket in the middle of the excessively hot rain forest, she's got no clue. Coming from a group that stole up and down every which way, she knows people often don't need a reason to take something.

She stiffened, hearing a voice. Grim, that's his name. "It's not the end of the world." She said, trying to smooth at least some of the annoyance from her face and voice. "I've just lost my jacket."

General
▪ Marine Beaufort | Goes by Marine or Ms. Beaufort
▪ Cis female | She/Her
▪ 18 years old | Ages real time
▪ Prodigy of Northstar District | Loyal to herself

Physical
♦ HUMAN | Health: 90%
[Note that certain aspects of her physical appearance are still being decided, hence vague language or lack of detail] Marine is a fairly tall young woman, with the lean, muscular body of someone who spent her entire life training while not getting enough to eat. The scars on her body (the most visible being one on her brow and several on her arms and hands) are souvenirs of a great many fights. The scars on her legs and torso are hidden by her clothes - typically she wears skinny jeans, a leather jacket, a tank top, combat boots, and fingerless gloves - all in edgy black. The monochrome is broken up, however, by a great deal of dirt, as well as different stains, most being blood, and by her red backpack. Marine is actually filthy everywhere, and her long dark hair is in tangles most of the time.

Important Info
▪ Cannot read or write more than her name.
▪ First priority is her own survival, all else comes secondary. Will prioritize children heavily before adults, and may even distrust and dislike adults, possibly blaming those in their forties or later for the blackout.
▪ Heavily armed with a sniper rifle (no ammo, used for intimidation), a handgun (4 bullets), a compound bow (8 arrows), a swiss army knife, a few other knives and daggers that she's picked up over the years. Uses the bow most for hunting and is most proficient with that, though she is capable with all of her weapons.
▪ Opinions, motivations and thoughts are always 100% in character and do not reflect the roleplayer's opinions.

Personality
Marine is someone whose negative traits tend to shine much brighter than her positive traits. She is incredibly selfish, and is motivated by her survival first and foremost, and she'll do anything to preserve herself. / muse is good !

Peaceful. Grim had never really known it. Well, he sort of had. A child watching his mother strip parts from vehicles that no longer ran, laying on his back in the sand to watch the stars with her. His dad teaching him to shoot glass bottles, ruffling his hair when he did it right. The older he'd gotten, the less peaceful things had seemed. The adults stopped having their arguments in whispers, and he'd seen plenty of them come back to their home with blood running down their bodies and bruises coloring their skin. Then he had been the one starting to come back with cuts and bruises, and Grim had realized that they couldn't survive with this. With a sixteen year old who was too restless to listen to them anymore, fully trained and ravenous in his own way. For a new world, for experiences that weren't a part of him yet. Nothing was ever enough, and when he had left, it was with his mother's rosary and his father's dog tags enough of home to make walking away easier than it would be without.

Somewhere along the way, his path had changed. He ran into Pip a bit before this, and well, now he was here. Not for the peace and quiet, not for the permanency. For Pip, though he doesn't even know him well enough to say why. They're near-strangers, yet he had guarded him as he slept, tagged along as he walked. All the way to this hellhole, and then he had stayed. It won't be said that Grim wasn't loyal, even if it was difficult to inspire that loyalty. This place? He doesn't care about it.

She's right that it's hot. But unfortunately, Grim doesn't share her practicality. Well, no, he does. He's just far too stubborn to give up as of yet. His own jacket is still placed securely on his shoulders, as is the white button-up underneath it. She looks kind of weird without the leather jacket, honestly. The corner of his mouth lifts into a faintly amused smirk at her frantic rushing about, and then the way that she looks at him when he interrupts her. "You lost your jacket?" He grunts something like a laugh. "That is the end of the world." But he knows that he would react just as badly if he lost his, so Grim only waits a moment before clearing his throat to catch her attention again. "Where'd you see it last?"

The instances of peace in Marine's life were few and far between, brief when they did happen. Things were relatively peaceful with her parents, up until their murders. There were fleeting moments with Angie, when things felt right, until she remembered the people sitting within earshot or sight range. Then she'd remember that things wouldn't truly be right until they were homeless. Funny, that, in a dry, humorless way.

At the end of the day, Marine wasn't loyal to anyone but herself. Not Michaelis, not Northstar, or the Rogues, she couldn't even pretend she'd been loyal to Angie. She was self-serving, self-preserving, but not to the point where she couldn't do things that benefit others, especially if their interests aligned. Take rebuilding the camp - it'd keep the group as a whole safe, but it would also keep her safe.

She shoots a frustrated glare at Grim, taking his words as condescending and sarcastic, but didn't say anything to anything but his final words, the ones asking where she'd last seen it. "I had it tied around my waist, but I think it fell off somewhere around here." Unfortunately, if that were the case, she'd have found it by now.

/ whoops sorry, though i replied

Life was hell, wasn't it? Maybe Grim was lucky about some of those things. His parents were alive, and he'd never really had any friends to lose up until now. (He's not sure if he has a friend to lose yet, either.) But he knew what it was like to need something unorthodox to be happy. He'd left his home, his family, because the world around him hadn't fit in place the way that it should. Rooms had been too small, and his family had cared too much, and he'd needed a place to call his own. Maybe he has every intention of going back to them someday, with a way to make their lives better. His father's pushing forty now, his mother just a few years behind. Far from old and infirm, but he knows that soon enough, they're going to need him. Unless no, he won't think about it. Part of him wants that. To head home. The rest of him, though? Shit, he doesn't know anymore. Maybe he can make a life for himself out here, you know? Maybe.

Shit, he's loyal. But it's all to the wrong things, the wrong ideas. He's loyal to softness, to things he needs to protect. He's loyal to an idea, and he's loyal to people, but he's scared, too. It's terrifying. He doesn't know how to be scared like this. In a way, he's self-serving too, though far less than Marine is. He's someone who has long since given up on his own personal safety, he just doesn't live for others. "Have you tried retracing your steps? Instead of running around like a chicken with its head cut off?" Grim's voice is still snide, yet he drops most of the act and sighs. "You gonna ask me to help, or make me offer?"

//it's alright! been trying to catch up on opens oops

Life is hell. She has long since accepted that fact and long since stopped believing that anything else exists. That it gets better. Yet she'd gone looking for better, trying to turn her life around. She didn't do it just because she wanted redemption or to be a person she could live with, she did it because the way she had been led to pain, pain she didn't want to experience ever again.

It'd be nice to have a home to go back to, to have left it because she wanted to and not because they wouldn't let her stay any longer. No matter how much she might like to, there was no going back. Ever. All she could do was keep moving forward, and so she did.

Marine side-eyes Grim. "Is that your impression of me? I'll have you know this is retracing my steps." More or less. It was true that she often ran around the camp seemingly sporadically. "Why? It's not your problem." Why should she enlist the help of someone else, or why should he feel obligated to help? They weren't friends, nor was there anything in it for him.

//this is terrible I'm sorry
