It was a bit difficult to make moonshine toxic enough to knock a man on his back in just a drink without a proper setup, now wasn't it? Luckily it wasn't too hard to find somebody with knowledge of backyard brewing, and drag them to the house in the middle of town he'd decided would be gutted and transformed into the brewery.

But of course, actually constructing such a setup took work and effort and all those awful things. So he sent out some Informants to inform the general public of a big build day, which was a code word for get over here and move out this shitty furniture so we can build a damn brewery or I'm gonna bitch for a week if I have to do it myself.

Jonathan certainly.. Well, Salem couldn't say he liked or trusted the guy. He was a bit unnerving, really; but he had his reasons for letting such a person rise in the rankings, as he did with Archer. He wasn't going to let something as minor as trust get in the way of using people.

He responded to Crow's smirk with a wink, and let it be. Crow could make his own assumptions about why Salem had promoted him, as could everybody else; frankly, he was excited to see what happened now that Crow had a taste of power.

Mike had approached him, and he tilted his head at the other man. "Infection? Yeah, fine. Northstar it is, but you're not going alone," Salem said, internally cringing at the thought of needing to go on another journey after he'd exasperated his leg injury the last time, but he'd rather Mike not go alone into enemy land- or even travel out of the Badlands on his own, in his state. "I'll go with you, just in case your serial killer stalker decides to tag along,"

Best to get it over with, right? He wasn't feeling up for the pizzazz, so he stayed on the ground instead of climbing onto the pool table like he normally did.

"Well, lets get started then. I'm removing neutrals as a classification for other groups; it seems kinda stupid to have both neutrals and allies, and we never use it anyways. So any group not classified as an enemy is open season, whereas if you want to go after somebody in an allied group you'd best run it through me first," Salem snarled the last bit, just to make sure it sank in.

"Next, I want us to focus more on our production schemes. Liquor production, weapons manufacturing, drug trafficking. Those used to be strong suits of the Badlands, and I want them back; expect a distillery to be put together in the next week, and I'll be looking to you lot to start pulling your weight beyond lazing around," Salem said, checking his nails as he did so; they were dirty, as per usual.

"I've gotten some complaints in recent days that we've been lacking focus lately, and I agree. We're going to be pivoting towards actually organizing our crime, and you know, actually committing it. I don't expect city-wide changes to be made overnight, but we've had plenty of time to slum around and now I want to get down to business. First order of business? Whoever kidnaps a doctor from- anywhere, really, gets promoted on the spot to Councilman," Salem paused to take a breath, and compose himself as pain shot through his leg. "Of course, we've got Crow now - hi Crow, welcome to the group - but I want more qualified care professionals around here. Relying on one person ain't gonna cut it anymore," He stopped, to let the statement sink in.

"I suppose I should stop and welcome the newcomer Doctor Crow and honorably mention Archer, who's recently found himself in my line of sight as well. Good on you both," Salem said all while leaning heavily on his makeshift cane.

"Now, where was I? Yeah, go kidnap a doctor. Bring em back, put them on a leash or something and we'll call them a Worm. I don't care where you get them from," Honestly, it'd be pretty funny if somebody brought back Lucerne; oh what a fun reunion that would be, he'd be able to see how Salem had fallen so far from grace he needed a shovel to get any further down.

"As for fun things, Archer, Scarecrow, you're both promoted to Officer. Don't ask for my reasons, just do as you're told," Salem said, a slow grin overtaking his face. "Bandanna box is here with me, come get your Officer bandannas after the meeting,"

He paused, trying to think of anything else of note. Oh yeah... "Sheogorath is missing in action, if anybody's got information as to where he is then it's to be reported to me or another high position, who then should report it to me. He's injured and sick, so he needs to be brought home as quickly as possible," He stopped, letting his emotions roll over him like a wave before continuing.

"You've all got your assignments, so meeting dismissed. Archer, Scarecrow, come pick up your bandannas," Salem said, waving the two men over.

There are OOC-only announcements, so please read the below.
Spoiler: OOC • show
IC Tl;dr:
—Welcome back to Archer / Van, and Sheo has switched characters to Crow
—Neutrals have been removed by popular demand, so now the Badlands can only classify groups as Allies or Enemies
—Salem wants to focus on producing drugs/weapons/alcohol
—Anybody who ICly kidnaps and brings back a doctor character (Not an NPC, must be a played character) will have their Badlander promoted to Councilman on the spot
—Archer and Scarecrow are both Officers
—Sheogorath is MIA, and any information about his whereabouts is to be reported to Salem

OOC Announcements:
—We recently held a Badlands Survey which had only 2 people responding to it. There will be a thread about the results within the next few days
The survey has since been closed, but I am willing to do another one if I am asked to do so.
—We still have a Badlands Opinions thread open in the Helping Hub, looking for feedback on how to run the Badlands better and how to built a cohesive, interesting theme; everybody is welcome and encouraged to track or respond to this thread
—To immediately address some points brought up in the survey, I would like to make two things clear:
1: If you have a problem with a member or character, please bring it up to me through messages and be willing to provide evidence for any claims you make. I'm willing to demote people who are acting inappropriately, breaking rules, bullying, etc, but not on anonymous complaints. This is the only way to be fair to both parties.
2: OOC activity is lagging, and I do and will continue to reward OOC activity paired with IC activity. Beyond that, I can't force anybody to be chatty or open to talking; I respect anybody who's with the Badlands mainly for the IC element, as I respect the people who primarily enjoy the OOC element.

I myself am an introvert, I have trouble starting conversations and have difficulty enjoying conversations that aren't on a topic I find enjoyable/am passionate about. I could talk for hours about the characters in the Badlands, but I have and will likely always struggle with smalltalk. The group for the past year was led by an extrovert, who's social abilities differ from my own. Why am I saying all this? Mainly because I want to address this issue, put all my cards on the table, and offer an open dialogue about making things better for the extroverts in the Badlands.

I was given the suggestions of using the discord's chatting and plotting channels more often, as well as the chatting thread we have in our OOC board. I'm going to make an effort to use those more often, and I encourage everybody else to do the same.
And if anybody feels their social needs are still not being met, I'm willing to listen and make changes to accommodate.
—We will be pivoting towards a more mafia-like theme. I'm going to need the cooperation of everybody here to make it happen; I don't ask for major changes in your characters, or even giant changes in behavior, but I want to ask for your continued support and feedback as I try to implement this theme.

To support this, Salem is now encouraging the illegal-goods production side of the Badlands much more heavily and I will be adding a new area to the territory: a Distillery. There will be an OOC thread soon asking for other suggestions for territory additions that fit the theme as well, as I'd like to add 1-2 more areas.

There's also a public call for people to kidnap a doctor and bring them back to the Badlands, in exchange for getting promoted to Councilman. The doctor must not be an NPC character, and can be kidnapped from any group (including allies) OR the character could've been a wanderer who got kidnapped. The only requirement is that they 1. have a basic knowledge of how to heal and 2. are a played character

Given that I'm not any kind of mafia enthusiast, I'm also taking suggestions/help for things to do to reinforce the theme! This can be as simple as making a list of open thread suggestions, having your character do things in line with the theme, letting me know when something technical (ex: the header of the board) doesn't reflect the theme properly, or even just recommending good media to consume about the mafia lifestyle and activities.

I think that's it for announcements? Anyways. Happy Easter everyone, I hope everybody's staying safe and healthy, I have barely slept so I will be retiring for the day after doing a few updates around the guide and BL discord. So yeah, make sure you drink enough water and eat.

The friendliness in the man's voice set off alarm bells in Salem's mind. Part of him craved it, desperate for positive interactions, but he steeled himself against that very golden-retriever type feeling and went with his gut feeling that something was off about the man before him.

...But he said he was a doctor, and they so desperately needed one of those.

"Nice to meet you both then, I'm Salem and I'd be happy to have you both in the Badlands," He did not say the convenient joke that Doctor Jonathan Crow had a pet crow, he did not say it; it was too easy, and liable to upset the person before him.

"So, you're a doctor? You're not one of those shits who claims a doctorate makes them a doctor, right?" Salem questioned, gesturing for Crow to follow him towards the city proper.

The cursing coming from inside was fun; Salem's mouth quirked up into a smile as he heard that, and he kept that small, smug look even as Micheal opened the door. "Good morning to you too, old man," Salem said, his tone of friendly teasing without too much bite in it.

He entered when offered, but didn't immediately sit; instead he looked around Mike's home, taking in the patched-up feeling of it. Yeah, he'd never understand why Mike didn't just move.

"I'd be a fool to turn it down," He turned his attention to coffee, now fully embracing the smell of it wafting through the air. Sure, he'd never had coffee before the blackout and therefore didn't know what high quality coffee tasted like, but it smelled good and that was enough to sate him.

"Well I wanted to check up on you, make sure you weren't beheaded in the forest," Salem's joking was on the morbid side as he moved to take a seat, only to have the chair collapse underneath him as he tried to sit.

With an indignant cry followed by a small whimper of pain, Salem scrambled away from the mess of broken wood. He simply gaped, anger clouding his mind and stopping any words from forming, but his face was a contorted mess of fury and indignancy.

Salem was beginning to dislike the beach. It brought back fond memories, of Sheogorath and Catalyst and Addy, and those fond memories just reminded him of people who left. But the cool ocean breeze was nice, and he wanted to check on Sheo's boat.

Instead of doing that however, he saw Crow sitting in the sand with his scythe in his lap and decided to approach. He came in from an angle, so the other man would've easily been able to see him in his peripheral vision.

"Nice day ain't it?" Salem said with a friendly smile.

Meeting time yet again, and Salem's thoughts were consumed with thinking about the most recently disappearing member of his group. He needed to find Sheogorath again, he needed that for his sanity so he knew the other man wasn't hurt or dead somewhere-

But now was not the time to be leaving off on some quest. No, it was meeting time! So with an unnatural looking forced smile, Salem called out. "Meeting, everybody get in here and pay attention,"

MY DEAR, THERE ARE SECRETS HERE | | |
The casino was a rather- interesting place. For being the heart of the Badlands, it'd begun to feel more like a drab, shadowed den of debauchery to Salem after months of living here. Any grandeur the place might've held to him once was overshadowed by memories, most of them less than pleasant.

He was drinking, as was usual for him, and currently tucked into one of the booths of the casino while staring absently at his drink. Somehow, drinking alone felt worse when his injured and sick friend was off who-knows-where, likely getting himself killed.

Startled by the sound of somebody tapping on a glass, like a fucking fancy person, Salem's gaze rose and he caught sight of the weirdo who'd joined recently. He was smiling, but it held the telltale signs of a superior smirk; not that Salem cared much, but he did note the discomfort of the people around the room.

"I think this is a great idea, Doc," Salem said, straightening up and grinning over at Crow. "Salem, Top Dog Monty Salem if you care for specifics. I've eaten a total of six scrabble pieces over my lifetime, and only four were because of bets," He supposed that said enough about him for anybody to make their assumptions.

Salem had been injured before, shot before; shot rather recently, in fact. In his right ankle, causing a rather unfortunate amount of pain and a persistent limp he'd simply decided to ignore until it went away; hopefully it went away.

But he hadn't had anybody to care for him when he'd been wounded and struggling; he had much the opposite, as his and Cat's power struggle reached a crescendo and all hell broke loose. Now it was sort of healed, but he knew how much of a bitch it was to deal with and he'd rather Mike not go through the first weeks alone with his own injury.

So bright and early in the morning, Salem packed his bag with a few mildly-bruised apples he'd purchased from some traders the other day and headed out. Mike really ought to sleep in, the extra rest would do him good; but Salem was confident Mike had at least been up for an hour now, since he was nothing if not consistently responsible to the point of self-destruction.

The smell coming from the little shack confirmed Salem's suspicions, and he came to a stop at the door and knocked on it politely three times. He wanted to burst in, just to reaffirm he could as Mike's leader, but he had no idea how heavily Mike locked his door and he'd rather not fail at kicking in a door this early in the morning.

Salem wasn't really used to everything smelling burnt, especially the burning smell of melting plastic but- he supposed it could be comforting, in a way, if he didn't think he was obtaining some kind of cancer from just breathing the toxin in.

Maybe he was just getting too old to properly enjoy this kind of fun, destructive nonsense. That was a depressing thought- he'd never be too old to be an anarchist, so he reached down, plucked a small twig off the sidewalk, and tossed it in the fire.

"I have no fucking idea who that is, but she sounds interesting," Salem said, glancing over at Archer and doing a small double-take at the smile on the other man's face before he focused in on the flask. "Can I have a sip, friend?" He asked, hoping beyond hope it wasn't water or vinegar or some shit like that.

AND WE CAN'T HAVE YOU LIVING A LIE
Today was beautiful; a truly lovely day. Perhaps he'd go down to the beach and go for a swim - really, it was the only time he got semi-clean - and then he might visit Mike, to make sure the Councilman was still managing with his shoulder injury. The evening- maybe he'd reserve that for seeing Sheogorath, it'd been all too long since they'd sat down together.

He'd ignore the frenzied excitement clouding his mind at the thought of spending the evening with Sheo; he'd put it down to him forgetting what it was like to have friends, and getting excited in turn when somebody returned his positive approaches with positive approaches of their own. And sailing! They still needed to go sailing; maybe he'd talk Sheogorath through some of the basics.

Seeing somebody fleeing from the beach with a mild amount of blood splattered on their clothes wasn't that unusual, what was unusual was how they ignored him when he shouted a greeting at them and just kept sprinting like their life depended on it. Huh, weird.

He continued to the beach, and saw a figure he presumed was sunbathing; laid out in the sand all calm-like. In fact, it sort of looked like Sheogorath- like Sheogorath with a fair amount of blood staining the sand around him, because shadows weren't that red.

Salem stopped his leisurely walk and ran over the sand, tripping once as his bad leg gave out underneath him - he wished he could kill that bandit twice for shooting his ankle - but clawing to his feet instantly and breaking into a run again. He reached Sheogorath quickly, and swore colorfully as he saw the blood was definitely coming from his friend.

"What happened?" Salem questioned, dropping to his knees and already moving to shrug his bag off his shoulder and pull out the towel he'd intended to use after he went swimming, and attempted to mop up some of the blood off of Sheogorath's injured arm.

He had said he'd only take unspent ammunition but... An 80 year old bottle of scotch? Yeah, now he was sorely wishing he'd rigged the race just so he could steal that from Mike. Salem noted the bet down. "I'll just say that's worth a hundred rounds in exchange," Salem commented.

After all, he liked relaxing with expensive wine- and perhaps share it with Sheogorath, whenever he found that man again. He'd just spot the ammunition to the winners and hope nobody called him on it.

"Good I'd say, how's the shoulder treating you?" Salem said, turning to look at Mike. He gestured at the lawn chair invitingly; he was fine with Mike taking his seat, it was only right considering he'd gotten shot recently. See? He could be not-selfish sometimes, maybe. He was starting to regret offering his chair.

The lack of respect from Mike didn't concern him all that much; he'd rather nobody call him Boss, since that's what people called Cat, and he was likely to get hit with a round of unwanted emotions if people started treating him like Catalyst. Salem was fine; it was his last name, so it wasn't like Mike was running around calling him Monty.

tw: talk of guns and presence of guns

Guns were fickle, fragile, and Salem rarely used his. His scimitar served him well enough for most conflicts, and it was remarkably uncommon occurrence for a gunfight to break out in the Badlands that hadn't been caused by the Badlands, and therefore appropriately prepared for.

Still, firearms were an important part of a defensible group; and Salem knew that, so he felt that keeping the populace of the group armed was one of his top priorities. Still, he didn't know jack shit about guns apart from knowledge scraped from how prominent they were nowadays; he hadn't been raised around firearms, apart from his father's handgun which he'd never gotten to touch or use, and people didn't usually teach classes about them nowadays.

But hey, experience was the best way to learn, right? He'd learned about kickback from getting knocked on his back from it, and he found out about proper gun cleaning after destroying one from the misuse. Perhaps he should find somebody to teach a class on gun handling and care- eh, that was a problem for later.

After filling his bag with boxes of ammunition from a few of the shelves, he stepped back and observed the rest of the little shopping crew. He noticed Archer, tears in his eyes, whispering lovingly to some firearms; and some part of Salem didn't want to know what the fuck that meant, but the larger part of him wanted to know so he could make fun of Archer for it, so he approached.

"Find anything good?" Salem said, attempting to clap the other man on the back and peer over his shoulder at whatever guns he'd acquired.

Walking straight into the wolves den like he wasn't coated in wool like any other sheep; a bold choice, almost impressively so. Strangers at the border were mainly left alone, or dealt with in a diplomatic manner; Salem couldn't expect his members to leave anybody who decided to wander too far past the hills alone, however.

But nobody had stopped the man- yet. Perhaps out of wary fear, perhaps out of excitement to witness him come across somebody truly horrifying - decapitated bodies left in the woods; women covered in blood after eating a deer carcass raw; wandering drug addicts drunk on violence; all somehow occurring in the area within recent memory - but Salem? Salem wasn't that horrifying. He might be ruthless, he might've killed many without question, and he might feel no regret for any of his terrible actions, but he was perhaps one of the friendliest faces Crow could've come across.

"What brings you to the Badlands, friend? You look like you're on a mission," Salem questioned in a friendly, welcoming manner. He stood at the bottom of the slope, not wanting to go through the effort of further hurting his bad leg when his quarry was headed towards him anyways.

Salem nodded at Mike's words, glad for the instructions and also incredibly glad Mike hadn't passed out from the trauma. He pulled the makeshift bandage tight, putting pressure on both sides of the wound and not minding that his hands were getting a little bloody from working on it.

"We should get you inside, I don't- hmm," Salem considered bringing Mike to Northstar; they did have that new clinic. But would Mike be able to make the journey? And- well, Salem didn't like the idea of being indebted to Northstar.

"Yeah, we should get you inside. Can you walk?" Face pulled into a grimace, he focused on the here and now. Mike wasn't about to die; they have some time before he bled out, and some time before infection became an issue. He'd have to shake down some Badlanders for medical supplies, but that was easily done.
