Title: YOU GOT BLOOD ON YOUR FACE, YOU BIG DISGRACE [part two: the punishment]
Post by: 𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐭 on January 08, 2019, 08:21:16 PM
//massive trigger warnings, primarily for mutilation and violence against animals, as well as references to injuries, death, general violence and possibly other things. Again, as with part one (http://www.bearbonesrp.com/index.php?topic=20368.0) anything big will be tagged in the relevant posts, and the most graphic parts will be spoilered. Please be cautious when reading this thread and take care of yourself first and foremost.

It had been a test that was designed for him to fail, with only the most desperate of actions on Sheo's part able to get him to pass. But after such treachery, how could it be anything less than extreme? And if the betrayal and test were so intense, surely the punishment for such actions and failure had to be too, right? Well yes, yes it did.

After responding to Sheogorath, they walked up the steps and knocked on the door to the casino. It opened, and out came Russel and Willow. Russel was dragging the fire pit (much to Cat's annoyance), and Willow was bringing out the fire pokers. There was a new one in the collection, though no one was likely to notice just yet. "Get that lit." They told the pyros, then turned back to Sheo and the crowd that had gathered. "Michael, I'm going to need you to keep him still." Not that Sheo would be able to resist or flee anyway, but all this would be much easier if he was kept still. They descended the steps, drawing a curved knife as they did so. They halted in front of Sheo and lifted their eyebrows. "It's no fun beating someone that's already been so brutalized, so your punishment will be a bit different than it might be normally."

They hooked the blade on the cord of Sheogorath's necklace, and with a gentle tug severed it, letting the stone and cord drop into their free hand. An unspoken demotion; he was no longer a Grunt of the Badlands, now a measly worm. They met his eyes for a moment, before their gaze traveled down to the rabbit in his lap. "I'm worried that this little guy might get in the way." They said, slicing through the rope that tethered the animal to Sheo, grabbing what remained and scooping up the rabbit, retreating up the steps as quickly as they'd descended.

sheogorath
and i say to myself, what a wonderful world
He had been set up to fail, he knew in an instant, as soon as Catalyst knocked on those doors, and out came the fire pit. It had all been planned. His punishment had begun the moment he had returned, and it had been plotted all the while he had laid dying in Flintlock. The thought was enough to agitate Sheogorath. He felt anger ignite in his belly, but the red haired man swallowed it down. No, this was meant to be. It was fate. Catalyst was merely a puppet of God's will. He had to face this.

Sheogorath couldn't deny his fear when he took notice of the pokers. He knew well enough what to expect. A fire? Pokers? A brand. He had denied Catalyst twice, and now it seemed it had meant nothing to them. Well, perhaps it had meant something, but nothing good. Nothing kind. The leader was to use Sheogorath's weakness and fear against him. Without the flickering of the flames, before it even began, before the fire pit was so much as motioned toward with a match, or any other kind of fire starter, the memories assaulted him. He knew what to expect. Hot, terrible pain. White, flashing torture. Agony. His heart hammered within his chest and he struggled to maintain a steady rhythm of breath. Sheogorath didn't feel ashamed of showing his fear. He had already been marked as weak. What more could he do to lessen what little respect might remain for him, out of pity? Perhaps he could try to roll away in his wheelchair. That would be truly pathetic.

Michael was mentioned by name. Meant to restrain him. Was it really necessary? Sheogorath wasn't going anywhere. But he supposed with his upper body strength, he was more than capable of delivering quite the blow to Catalyst, should they get too close. But the man wouldn't have done that. He had already decided to submit to this. To the pain. To the suffering. He'd hate it, but he had accepted it. Sheogorath had never truly been a religious man, and in that moment, he still wasn't quite sure that he was. There was still an ounce of doubt that had seeded itself within his mind, tormenting him. While he was certain of one thing, that in every possible religion, he would be damned, his soul lost to some form of hell, he couldn't help but wonder if this, the punishment, was truly a part of God's plan. But believing that it was...it helped him accept it. So he did his best to find the faith he had never had before in that moment.

Catalyst approached, a knife in their hands. The chord around his neck was cut away. A Badlander no longer. Everything that had marked him as such had been taken from him. Perhaps he was to become a worm. The lowest of the low. Or perhaps he would be exiled. Which would be the kinder mercy? He had nowhere else to go. Flintlock would never take him in. They hated him, and they had every right to. Perhaps in the future, when he was long forgotten...older. But until then, The Badlands was his only home, even if he was to be a disrespected worm. To be allowed to stay was his only true hope at life, as he had yet to make up for the foul deeds of his past, though he was all too aware, that nothing would save his wretched soul.

Sheogorath hadn't expected Catalyst to go for his rabbit, the thing that was precious to him most, asides from his ferret, Twister. Which, thankfully, was still in the library. At least, Sheogorath hoped as much. But losing Marshmallow had never been a string within his thoughts. His mind couldn't comprehend such cruelty, and yet the leader snatched the bunny away in an instant. Sheogorath knew Catalyst would kill her. He knew. What other reason did they have for plucking her away from his lap? They were not kind. They were cruel, as he had once been. He knew the mind of devils all too well.

"She never did anything to you!" Sheogorath protested, his voice a near whimper as he outstretched his arm, as if to reach for her, but she was gone, in Catalyst's grip as they walked back up the steps. Why was Marshmallow to share in his punishment? The animal was innocent of all crimes. Not even the Sheogorath of old would have dared touch another's pets, to take away that which could provide comfort to the broken, and glee to the sad. Sheogorath had been an evil man. But he hadn't been as evil as that. There was a difference, he believed, between murdering a person, and a pet. People held secrets, darkness within their hearts. No person was without sin. But the animals were. They weren't meant to be harmed, to be murdered. Catalyst was worse than Sheogorath had been. Catalyst was a monster.

"speech" 'thought' text
tw: mentions alcohol, blood, profanity, themes of violence

Michael stood still, his body rigid as he listened to Cat speak to Russel and Willow, he wasn't entirely sure what was going to happen to Sheo, though he did know it would not be pleasant for either of them (him or Sheo). The man blinked slowly, his jaw tight, he didn't believe in unnecessary violence or bloodshed. Though he could see how Cat felt this was a good step to take after Sheo had disrespected them... a few times now.

Still, he was a tad bit worried about what he was going to witness, with a start, he realized his name had been called out, coupled with a barked order for him to restrain Sheo. Restrain him from doing what? After a silently muttered oath under his breath, and a swift crossing of himself, Michael closed the distance between himself and the stage being set for the "amusement" and "entertainment" of the group that he had chosen to be his home.

Wordlessly he took up a position behind Sheogorath, not making another move until directed to do otherwise. He was holding Sheo still, though it did not seem that the man needed much prompting, even as the beloved pet of his was torn from it's rope. Mike was a firm believer that anything innocent did not deserve to be caught up in the crosshairs of corrupt people. But it seemed that Cat was not of the same belief, and so, Michael could say nothing as he watched the white rabbit taken away.

His face held no emotion, a stone wall of nothingness as he stood behind Sheo, blinking every so often to moisten his eyes. Other than that, and the faint rising and falling of his chest, it was questionable whether he was alive or not. It was his business face, his soldier facade. The wall between him and emotions erected and kept in place to keep him from feeling anything, even a pang of sympathy for the victim before him.

Things had taken a turn for the worst indeed.

Gabriel had held his breath after Sheogorath had admitted to fleeing to Flintlock Lodge. How would Catalyst react, he wondered. Then, things started moving. Catalyst had moved forward to forcefully take Sheo's bunny rabbit from him and Michael had moved from his side to behind the wheelchair-bound man. Gabe was simply left standing there, frozen, unsure of what to say or do now. Something was going to happen, he could feel it in his gut, but what? Did he slip away without notice or did he stay and watch if Cat wanted him to?

Head whirling with racing thoughts and feelings, caught up in the rush of the moment, he was caught off-guard by the two that had just walked out of the casino Russel was carrying a fire pit, and Willow prods of some sort. What kind of setup was this? Had Catalyst been planning this all along? Gabriel furrowed his brows, watching silently as the two teenagers followed at Cat's command. He eyed Willow in particular; he hadn't a clue of this, but then again, they hadn't spoken recently.

Sheogorath was calling after the pet bunny that the leader had stripped away from him. He was not receiving a punishment, so he could only assume what was going to come next. Gabriel's breathing started to quicken, though he remained cool and collected on the surface. He was going to stand and wait for what was to come next, though something told him that he already knew.

trigger warnings for killing an animal (the worst is spoilered)

Indeed, Catalyst had been planning for this, preparing and plotting. Perhaps it gave this cruelty an extra edge, but they never claimed to be kind. Truly, they didn't want to have to summon the teenagers with their little fire pit and pokers, didn't want to have to punish Sheo like this. But they had a feeling that it would be necessary, and as it turned out, it was.

They walked up a couple steps, gently cradling the rabbit. There was a fire going now, growing bigger by the minute as it consumed its fuel. "Could you heat that one up for me? The big T, yes, that one." That was addressed to Willow; they didn't linger on her, however, and turned around, facing Sheo once more. The handle of the knife was pinned between the rabbit's back and their hand, the blade pointed outward. Their long fingers were running through her fur, trying to comfort the quaking animal. "Perhaps not, but her master is a traitor that must be punished somehow."

Spoiler: TRIGGER WARNING FOR VIOLENCE AGAINST ANIMALS • show
Catalyst knelt down on the steps and set the rabbit down, though they kept their hand on her and kept her from running away. They readjusted the knife in their hand, then dragged the blade across the creature's throat, spilling blood onto her fur and the steps. Of course, their hands weren't clean either.

They stood up, leaving the body on the step. They turned to Sheo and cocked their head to the side, taking in his reaction to their actions. There was no light in their pale blue eyes, just the cruelty and darkness that had convinced the gullible that they were a god capable of ending the world. "I had this made while you were away. I see no reason for you to believe me, but I truly didn't want to use it." They ascended the stairs and stood behind Willow, taking the poker from her hand and watching the flames like the brand for a few minutes until it was hot enough. Then they advanced on Sheogorath.

sheogorath
and i say to myself, what a wonderful world
tw for mentions of animal death

Sheogorath briefly wondered how the others present felt. Were their loyalties wavering at the thought of such cruelty, or were they as cold as Catalyst themselves? The hungry flickering of the flames brought back painful memories that Sheogorath struggled to choke down, but his attention, first and foremost, was on his rabbit. Marshmallow had done nothing wrong, and yet she was to be killed for his sins. The man could feel his faith waver. Would God be so cruel as to allow the murder of his own innocent creations to punish the sinner?

"Bastard." Sheogorath lowered his voice into a daring snarl, anger igniting his gaze. He wished he could stand. He wished he could kill Catalyst then and there, an effort that would ruin all he had worked so hard for. Who would stop him? Michael perhaps, but after the leader was dead, what then? Would he be punished further, or would the Badlands simply seek out a new leader? But no. He could only imagine. He could only picture the differences that could be made, had circumstances been different. Had he been different. Sheogorath knew it was wrong to hate, wrong to feel such raging fury, but it burned in his heart and settled with the intensity of hellfire.

Sheogorath deserved it. But Marshmallow deserved only happiness. Catalyst was cruel. They weren't being fair. With a turn of the blade, the bunny was dead, and Sheogorath choked with his grief. Rabbits were special to him, like Haskill, his former pet. Now Marshmallow was gone forever, a fate she did not deserve. A fate that a monster had passed down upon her. Sheogorath wasn't sure how to feel in that moment. Hate. Red hot rage. Sorrow. Grief. Hopelessness. He deserved it, for all he had done. And yet he had never intended for an innocent to die in his place. Marshmallow deserved so much better. If this was God's chosen punishment for Sheogorath and all of his sins, then he wasn't sure that he wanted to change anymore.

A solemn breath was drawn through teary features as Sheogorath began to cry. It wasn't right. None of this was right. But he let his hate melt away, and he let his anger simmer and fade, replaced instead by sad acceptance. Sheogorath cast out his doubt that God would choose to allow the infliction of such cruelty. If this was his punishment, his test, then he had to endure it. Had to face the pain. Face the emotional turmoil, the cruelty, the agony. As Catalyst stood from the step, Sheogorath let his gaze linger upon Marshmallow's body, sending her a silent goodbye, and a painful apology.

The leader was speaking, but the red haired man didn't believe a word of what was said. They were enjoying this. They were sick. Nothing could convince Sheogorath of anything else. But he couldn't fault the other person. Once, he had been the same. It would be wrong for him to condemn another for the actions he once would have leaped at the chance of. Catalyst advanced, with their poker in hand, red hot and glowing. But Sheogorath, despite the memories that assaulted him, managed to stay in the present even as he lowered his head with a quiet sob. There was no escaping the pain that was soon to come. It was only now a matter of living with it.

//trigger warnings for mutilation (worst will be spoilered) and talking about animal death and murder. Permission to powerplay was given

Was that all he really had to say? Well, ranting and raving wouldn't save his rabbit, nor would pleading for forgiveness. What's done was done, and there was no going back. Was it the worst thing they'd ever done? Possibly, it depended on what you thought was worse; killing a defenseless animal or killing a human? Sure, many of the murders they had committed weren't strictly necessary, and some, if not most of the victims had been rendered defenseless by the time their death came.

Spoiler: TRIGGER WARNING FOR THE MUTILATION OF A HUMAN • show
Cat used their knife to cut through Sheogorath's shirt, then tossed it aside and used their hand to rip it open enough for them to have a clear shot with enough room for the brand. "Keep him still." They told Michael, for this was the part that was really going to require stillness but would likely cause him to thrash, even involuntarily. They drew back and lifted the brand, then pressed it into Sheogorath's flesh. They grimaced at the smell and sizzle (and possible screams), and after a few seconds they pulled back and rested the poker on the ground.

"I don't especially care what you do now, but I'd recommend keeping a low profile." They didn't care if he stayed or left, or what the other members of the Badlands did to him. So long as Sheo didn't find some new way to betray them.
