Henri sighed in bitter annoyance as he finished the letter he was writing. News of an oncoming attack from invaders had toppled the whole kingdom into turmoil. He'd received an influx of concerned messages from citizens wanting to know what was going on and what the plan was. For the most part, he'd ignored them, but there was no ignoring it when the aristocrats began to write him as well. Just as he began to seal the wax onto the letter, a timid voice made him turn. It was one of the servants.

"Your highness, they're expecting you."

Ah yes, the all important meeting his father had requested he attend. It was something he'd been dreading for awhile, but it was a necessary evil. Henri had been taking the reins from his father when it came to planning, and it was about time he spoke with the military advisor and his daughter, whom had also become quite a voice lately.

The prince rose from his desk and followed the servant towards the meeting room. The weight of the battle showed heavily upon the young royals face. Dark circles bruised the underneath of his eyes, and his dirty blonde hair was quite disheveled. Overall he took the appearance of someone too young to handle this kind of responsibility, yet did so anyways. Fitting, he assumed.

When they approached the heavy oak doors of their destination, Henri thanked the servant and sent him on his way. His pale hands clasped the metal knob and he entered with a slightly muttered apology. The advisor and his daughter had not yet arrived, so he quickly seated himself at the large table between his parents.

The Queen gave a tight lipped smile at her son. She, too, seemed utterly exhausted with the chaotic state of her kingdom, but handled it far more elegantly than her husband or child. Her emerald dress was formal as always, and her greying blonde hair was pinned atop her head amid pearls and blooms. How she managed to do it even with servants was beyond Henri. The King was normally a very robust man, but had lost much of his brawn from stress. He too gave a wordless greeting to the prince as they awaited the arrival of their guests.

grace elisabeth calistoga

Grace didn't have the best wake up call that morning. The half-orphaned woman was awoken by her father bursting into her bedroom. He had told her that an emergency meeting had come up and that she needed to make herself presentable.

So, Grace hurriedly dressed herself in a heavenly burgundy gown tipped with golden embroideries. Fit for a princess, it seemed. Her rich brunette curls were pinned half up, half down with a matching gold encrusted circlet. One could definitely guess her class, and perhaps even her education level. She wrapped a royal blue cloak around herself and hoisted herself onto her horse, alongside her father, and rode onto the palace grounds to meet with the King and Queen and the Prince she had known her entire life, but at the same time... not really.
Lord Calistoga and herself were escorted into the map room to meet with the royals. Both Grace and her father dipped into deep, respectful bows.

"My Lord," her father rumbled, "I present my daughter to you, Lady Grace. As you know, she has recently come of age and has begun to accompany me on my duties. Especially in these troubling times," he murmured to the King, knowing that father-to-father, the safety of their children was their priority.

"Now, one of our port cities, unfortunately, has fallen captive to the invaders. At this time, I have no reports of survivors, or even hostages," Lord Calistoga reported solemnly. "We need to talk to our allies about setting up a refuge for the people who are still alive out there. We cannot keep letting them die. At their own expense, these invader scum are inching closer and closer to city center every day. There's too much to lose here."

Grace watched cautiously. Her father was remarkably comfortable speaking to the King. She knew they were good friends. Her father had been advising the King since he had ascended to the throne, nearly forty years ago. Still, she knew there was still some manner of respect to be had among those above you.

At the request via persistent glances from his mother, Henri quickly fixed his hair to make himself more presentable. No sooner had he when servants entered the room and placed the royal coronets on their heads. He frowned and raised his hand to adjust it, put quickly pulled it back down when it was swatted away by the Queen. A small smile crossed her face, and he returned it. That was the first genuine moment they'd been able to share for quite awhile.

When Lord Calistoga entered the room, all three royals stood in respect and nodded to the others bow. Quickly the young woman who accompanied Lord Calistoga was introduced as Lady Grace. She was a very pleasant woman, and the young Prince made it a point to give her a warm smile. So this was the one he'd been hearing of.

"Ah yes, Lady Grace."
King Alfred turned to her, "It's a privilege to make your acquaintance. Your father is a good man, and I owe him a great deal. If I can ever be of service to you, please don't hesitate."

Queen Selena closed her eyes in disbelief at the news of the port city. The King heaved a large sigh and nodded slowly at his friends words.

"Yes, you are correct. We will send for them at once. I do believe Henri has been keeping close contact with a few noblemen outside. Haven't you?" The King glanced at his son who nodded in confirmation.

"Yes, father. I've been receiving and sending letters daily. I will contact someone as soon as possible, though I can't promise a quick or reliable delivery in these times." It was true. Here lately a good portion of his letters would arrive late, heavily damaged, or sometimes not at all. It'd been a cause for outrage among the recipients.

"Shall we send someone reliable to deliver the message in person?" Queen Selena chirped from where she'd originally been very silent. "At the very least, arm them. That way there would be a better chance of our message getting delivered."

//Thank you ha! Don't worry you're all good <33

Grace listened. There was no news of air invaders. If they were cautious, they could send someone via hippogriff. She cleared her throat lightly. "Perhaps it might be best if someone close to the palace were to deliver it by hippogriff? There have been no reports of anything going on in the air. If the messenger is careful, I think they could easily make it to Astyre to request help, or even refuge. I'm fairly certain the King of Astyre has nothing but positive feelings towards us, and the kingdom is a generous one. It's a least worth looking into,"  she finished, dipping her head. Speaking in front of the royals made her nervous- especially the prince. She wanted to get on Henri's good side before he took the throne so as to decompress any tensions toward herself during these stressful times. Grace noticed the prince's warm smile and she made a point to return it. She was certain by now his parents had arranged some kind of foreign princess for him to marry, but given the circumstances, perhaps that wasn't at the top of their priority list right now. Otherwise, the Prince would likely already be married. Grace kept a close eye on Henri the rest of the conversation, just to read his body language and go from there.

When Grace spoke of her idea, the royals all shared a collective glance at each other for a few moments. They quietly talked over her plan, weighing the pros and cons in hushed voices amongst each other. Soon, King Alfred broke away from his family's group talk and gave a chuckle of surprise. "Ah, Lady Grace, you take after your father well. I would not of thought that. Very well done, my dear." After his praise, he went back to addressing the room.

"Although there are no riders directly under the influence of Windhelm, we should be able to find one that is reliable enough to trust with this information. Henri?
"

Henri glanced up at his father and nodded. "Yes, I believe I will be able to track one down soon enough. May need some help, though. I'm sadly not familiar enough with that crowd."

There was no use hiding the glint of a bright idea that flashed in the watery blue eyes of the King. "Be it so. At the blessing of Lord Calistoga, I request that Lady Grace and Prince Henri work together in finding a reliable hippogriff rider to deliver our call for help and refuge to Astyre. Do you accept?" He glanced at the pair with a bright grin, as if the weight of the ongoing battle was lifted just a tad. He had a great amount of faith in his son and the daughter of his closest friend. "Room and board will be offered, if needed, but we must make haste."

Henri practically choked on his own air at his father's request. He'd been assigned several tasks before in his short life, but usually they were completed solo or with very minimal interference. The pale boy turned a slight pink as the thought sunk in. Contrary to what Grace assumed, he'd not been betrothed as of yet. He'd met with several princesses before when his family would travel to have a meal and stay the night with their family, but any affection showed by them was immediately brushed off and not reciprocated. It was well known in the castle that the prince had far too many things to concern himself with, nevermind courting.

//O that's cool! I like that. Also the name of their kingdom I took from Skyrim lol oops.

Grace spoke immediately, dipping her head in the highest respectful manner she could muster up. "It would be an honor to serve alongside the Prince, my Lord," she confirmed. She cast a steel gray glance over at the Prince to see him slightly distressed that his usual methods of working were being disrupted, and quite honestly, she expected him to protest.

Lord Calistoga practically beamed. He and King Alfred had many a time joked about the possibility of their children perhaps marrying someday and combining two excellent bloodlines. "I gave you my blessing the day my daughter was born," he chuckled, trying to ease some of the tension in the room, especially that coming from the King himself. "We're putting the fate of the kingdom in the hands of the two most capable people to walk this realm. I have every faith that they will succeed gracefully," he added.

Grace squirmed under his words. Yes, she had always known about the jokes her father made with the King about being betrothed to the Prince. He would always come home and share his jokes with his wife. And one day, the sharing stopped. The day Lady Calistoga had died of a cold that just wouldn't heal. Grace knew that when the King and Queen looked at her, they only saw Lady Victoire, and it upset her greatly. To be compared to the woman she hardly got to know beyond puberty. It hurt Grace's heart very much to see a look of sadness flash across her father's face whenever her mother's name was mentioned.

Henri offered a slightly uncomfortable, yet somewhat reassuring glance at the Lady. He knew that however long this was going to take would feel twice as. He too had heard time and time again from King Alfred about how he might as well be married off to Lady Grace.

C'mon, Henri! We're practically family as is. Make it so, boy. he had said.

He cringed slightly at the memory, but it did warm his heart. That was back before the invaders. Back before he could hardly get a night's sleep.

It'd been a long time since anyone had heard the genuine belly laughter of the King at whatever joke you'd told, felt the gentle and loving gaze of the Queen as you asked for advice, or seen the playful devilish smile of the prince when you misplaced something. They used to dance, but now the royals sat across from the Lord and the Lady were shells of themselves. Not fully gone, but not truly there either.

King Alfred nodded in agreement. "Yes, yes we are. I know that together they will honor our kingdom and their ancestors." His smile was grim, but his eyes were still carrying that hopeful glow from before. He knew his friends pain over his fallen wife, and couldn't begin to place himself in his shoes. Without his wife, Alfred wouldn't of been the king he was today.

Then, the King clasped his hands together. "So it is done. Our children will surely prevail and find us the best rider in all of Windhelm. They both have my blessing to take full advantage over whatever resources they need. My home is yours, Grace. Just as it is your father's."

//it doesn’t matter to me!! We can skip :)

The discomfort that the Prince was putting off seemed to rub off on Grace. Although, yes, she knew of the jokes and the secret pleads, this was strictly professional. There were more important things than marriage at the moment. She moved over to the Prince and cleared her throat. ”I think we should be the ones to deliver. It’s a matter of time, here, and we really don’t have the time or resources to wait on a messenger. We know what we’re doing, we know the details, we know what needs to be said. It will be much quicker to discuss in person rather than takin the time to write it out.” she stated. She knew very well she could easily be shot down, because it was indeed an incredibly risky trip. Their lives were at stake. She couldn’t necessarily speak for the Prince, but she knew she was ready to lay down her life for her kingdom. Would the Prince risk his as well, or another one of his subjects?

”Grace. Absolutely not,” Lord Calistoga hissed. ”I lost your mother and I’llbe damned if I’m going to lose you too. Especially over some undead scum. You will not be going.” he demanded, putting up his hand to stop whatever protest may come out of his daughter’s mouth. ”You look so much like Victoire. I can’t bear to look at the same face if I have to lay you to rest, too,” he said, much gentler this time.

Although he did not speak at first over Grace's request, the King furrowed his eyebrows and seemed to ponder the thought. It was clear where his mind was in the subject, however, as he continuously shook his head no.

Henri looked over at the Lady with surprise. That was quite a heavy request, but one he was not entirely against. Just as she, he would lay his life for his kingdom without second thought. The Prince straightened and laid a hand on a map that was decoratively pinned to the table.

"If I may," He cleared his throat. "Lady Grace raises a fair point. Nobody would know the status of our kingdom better than ourselves. A messenger with no true connection wouldn't be able to explain the severity as well as us. If we armed ourselves enough and carried plenty of supplies, I don't see why we couldn't make the journey. Astyre is our sister palace. It's not all that far, and we'd make even better time if we left by morning come when the weather is good."

Speaking so much at one interval was very out of character for the young royal, and it was all too apparent that he felt just as strongly on the subject. Despite turning pale when the matter was first brought up, the Queen sucked in a breath and placed a hand on her son's shoulder.

"I have great confidence in my son's words. Nobody could convey the message with as much detail and urgency as one of our own, and I trust that the two of them can express that."

King Alfred raised his eyebrows at his wife's words, but seemed to drop his shoulders in ease. "They raise a fair point."

Edward Calistoga tensed up. ”You’re going to let them go on their own? They’re children!” he spat. ”We are sending our children into death’s grip!”

Grace narrowed her eyes. ”I am only an adult woman laying down her life for her country. I advise you to do the same,” she muttered, going to stand next to the Queen. And then, she saw it. The look she hadn’t seen since she was a young child. Edward narrowed his eyes angrily. ”My Lord, with all due respect, I cannot allow you to give my daughter explicit permission to exit this kingdom under such pretenses. It is dangerous. They could die, and then where will we be? We will have no heir, and we will still end up sending a messenger, and I will have to lay my daughter to rest,” he snapped.

As Grace opened her mouth to protest, he hit her, hard, across the face, nearly knocking her onto the floor. She instinctively grabbed onto the Queen to keep her balance. Quickly apologizing, Grace stood upright and held her reddened cheek, severely embarrassed at what had just happened.

None of the royals had much time to speak in between the fierce argument between Grace and Edward. King Alfred stood from where he sat and moved to break it up, but that's when the slap happened.

Things froze for a second in Henri's world. His mind instantly exploded in a red hot emotion he'd never felt before. Just as the Queen went to take Grace away from the room, the furious boy practically lunged over the table at Lord Calistoga.

His consciousness was clouded with a confusing anger that would soon shock him and everyone who witnessed it's display. Despite being so incredibly drawn into himself all the time, the young prince was no easy opponent in a fight. He had his father's height, but was lean instead of beefy.

Fists were thrown on both sides and it got so thick, Henri could only judge where he was hitting by the dull smack of fist meeting flesh. His eyes burned, but he could still see the Queen leading Grace away out the corner of his vision. Good, she didn't need to see this.

The feeling of strong arms around him made Henri finally start coming back to reality.

"HE'S HAD ENOUGH, HENRI!"

Despite sounding as though he'd been yelling for awhile, his fathers voice only just started making sense in his mind. The boy stopped hitting, and went limp from exhaustion in his arms.

"We will discuss this tomorrow, Edward. Leave immediately or you will be escorted away."

King Alfred released his son from his grasp (who sauntered off to lean against the cool stone wall) and pointed toward the exit. An unforgiving glare tore straight towards his friend. There would be much to discuss.

In the privacy with the Queen, Grace deemed it emotionally safe to break down. She had always longed for the queen’s motherly ways, especially since her own mother's passing. It was something she had always envied the Prince intensely for. As the Queen led her out, Grace broke down in hysterical sobs.

Edward, wiping blood from his brow, gave an angry glare at the Prince and turned, exiting the room. When Grace saw her father leave, she pushed back into the map room. ”There’s something you need to know,” she gasped to the king. She was still trying to compose herself, the welt on her face totally out of her mind. Being back in the room made her burn with embarrassment. Seeing the Prince slightly bloodied up was cause for puzzlement, but she’d annoy him about it later. She seemed her father and his abusive ways a little more important at the moment. She pulled out a chair, needing to sit. Normally, she would stand, but with all this- she was emotionally exhausted.

The Queen kept an arm around Grace in both defense and comfort. She rested a hand on the girls knee and looked up at her with a warm gaze. "It's alright, my sweet. Take a deep breath and tell us. We're all here for you."

King Alfred nodded wordlessly in agreement and pulled a chair up near the two. It was very apparent that if Edward dared to pull a stunt like this again, the Prince wouldn't need to get involved. Putting his anger aside, he gave a gesture to Henri to also sit.

The youngest royal pushed himself off the wall and clambered over to the trio. He opted to sit directly on the other side of the Queen. The sight of the welt on the young girls face made his brown eyes darken, but he simply stared at the table in front of him.

From what he could feel on his own face, there would definitely be a black eye and possibly a busted lip. His explosion was a lot to process, but the prince still maintained the air of protection and comfort that swelled inside the room. He'd have to apologise for his extreme outburst later on.

"Please do tell me. Has he acted this way before?" The Kings voice was calm and steady despite his racing heart.

It took several deep breaths to calm Grace down enough to speak coherent sentences. ”My mother did not die of a cold that would not get better. She died because my father went on a drunken rage and stabbed her to death. He is a murderer, he is an abuser, he-“ she cut herself off. No, she wasn’t going to go that far. These people didn’t need to know what the past twenty years of her life have looked like. ”When he is off duty, he drinks. He abuses. He hits-“  she pulled down the shoulder of her elegant gown to reveal an astronomical bruise in the shape of his perfect fist along her chest and breast area. ”I don’t know what else I want to quite say, but everything you’re assuming is probably correct. I was not conceived out of love on a blissful wedding night,” She breathed, looking down. God, she was ashamed. Grace knew something felt off when she woke up this morning. She just didn’t know she would be spilling her life story to the three most powerful people in the realm. ”After my mother was murdered, he turned all of his frustrations on me. Bad day at the palace? I would hear about it.  Got into a fight and he was still angry? I have the marks for it. Couldn’t hire a prostitute? I suffered through it. I don’t know how he is so good at what he does and help you lead this country so pridefully when he is actually a despicable human being.” she mumbled, holding her cheek again.

The Queen's breath hitched in her throat. She had been great friends with Victoire, and learning of her life and fate made her almost green. The usually timid woman seemed ready to hike up her dress and hand Edward his inevitable fate right there and then.

She contained herself and squeezed the girls shoulder lightly. "My dear girl, with the Gods as my witness, you shall never have to face that man again." Her eyes travelled over to her husband.

While Grace talked and explained the hell she'd been through all her life, Alfred and Henri both stewed in their anger wordlessly. Almost shaking, the King spoke. "Yes. He will pay for his crimes, my dear. Thank you for telling me. You're a very brave soul. My sincerest apologies for the torture you have been set through."

The heavy ginger man let out a shaky sigh. "I will have him arrested at once. He is no longer an advisor. As of this very moment he is but a prisoner and a slave. This coward will meet his fate soon enough, that I promise."

Henri straightened in his chair. "Aye. Full of pain and fear until the very last moment. I'll see to it, personally." His tone was very dark and steady, but his last word was nothing short of a spat. He was disgusted to have ever been touched by such a man, even if it was in a fight he'd started.

The Queen glanced at her son with concern, but ultimately nodded and turned back to Grace, her arm still comforting the younger girl. "We shall have a room prepared for you at once. You're more than welcome to stay indefinitely. Even if you do not decide to go forth with the journey."
