grace elisabeth calistoga

Grace shifted uncomfortably, looking at each royal in turn. Her cold gray eyes filled with fear, as if she were afraid her father would retaliate against the King. It was an absurd thought, but it still very much crossed her mind. ”Am I a bad person for letting all this be known? Destroying someone else’s life?” she asked, turning to Queen Selena. ”I don’t- My whole life will change. I don’t ever want to see him again, believe me,” She breathed, shakily tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Perhaps this was for the best. The thing that caught her off guard the most was Henri’s change in behavior and in attitude. He didn’t seem bored anymore, but rather eager to wrap his fingers around someone’s neck without letting go until they were cold and blue. Grace began to wring her wrists anxiously. ”I regret saying anything, but- I wouldn’t feel right about letting people go on to think my mother lived this grand life.”

Henri Earl Ashdowne
FACECLAIM

Queen Selena shook her head wildly. "No no no, don't think those things. You've done the right thing by telling us. He's a criminal, and needs to be stopped before he hurts someone else."

The thought of this man possibly taking advantage of her subjects as he did his own damn daughter filled Selena with a dark kind of rage. She would never let that happen to someone ever again if she had anything to say about it. This was a push for something inside of her, and this royal was a dog with a bone.

Before the King could interject at Grace's last statement, Henri piped up. "Don't entertain those thoughts. There's nothing for you to regret. You've done nothing wrong. Nothing at all. Soon enough people will know what kind of person he is."

The Queen gave another tight lipped smile and began to ponder. "Do not worry about anything further, Grace. Leave that to us. I can't imagine how your day has been, and I think it will be best if you retire for tonight. I can't imagine you would still be fit for the mission. If you'd like, we can go back to sending someone else for a rider."

Grace wiped a few tears of relief from her eyes. ”No! I don’t want this to distract from what we have to do. I don’t want to risk millions of lives just because my own life came to light. We still have a very important job to do. I will grieve and recover when we return,” she promised Queen Selena solemnly.

Grace glanced over to Henri. ”Are you still up for it? I think it’s best we start this journey off in the dark- we’ll be less likely to be spotted over the occupied areas. What about dusk this evening? I’ll sleep and rest up the rest of the day and we can leave tonight,” she bartered desperately. She didn’t want to take an opportunity of life from one more person by the time they spent focusing on her. She stood up slowly, dusting her gown off. ”Perhaps, if it wouldn’t be much trouble, I could request an escort to my home to retrieve some of my things after my father is arrested?”

The royals were definitely surprised by her declaration. King Alfred gave a respectable nod at her direction and Queen Selena smiled with a bit of relief. "If you feel that is what you must do, I urge you to follow your heart."

Henri raised an eyebrow in slight disbelief, but a crooked grin made it's way across his face. "I'm more than ready. I'll send for the hippogriffs and supplies then rest up as well. Consider it done and we'll leave at your call." He stood himself up as well and nodded. "I will accompany you when it is done."

The King and Queen both arose and exchanged anxious, but proud glances at one another. Alfred smiled and rested a hand confidently on Grace's shoulder. "I'll have it done at once. By the time you arrive there he will be long gone. You won't even cross his path, trust me." Without another word, the King exited the room to take care of what needed to be done. By the way he walked, it was very clear that Edward didn't stand a chance even if there was a fight.

"I will see you two off tonight. I'll make sure everything is arranged so you shall not worry yourselves. When you return with the belongings, I'll have a light meal prepared in preparation for your journey. You'll need the energy."

With that and a very tender hug for Grace, Selena also exited the room quickly to do as she promised. This left the two completely alone.

"You rode here, yes? I will retrieve my horse and we can be off. I imagine he's saddled by now. The walls have ears, and the servants always know."

Grace wiped her eyes one final time and settled herself, putting herself back together. ”Yes, I rode here, The stablehand took my horse upon arrival, so it should be down there among the others,” she nodded, stepping out to get ready to go. She took a deep breath and followed the Prince out into the courtyard. She began to make a list of things she needed- her nicer clothes, clothes for the trip, small things her mother had passed down to her-

Grace cleared her throat lightly. ”I’m sorry about what happened. None of that was my intention, in the least bit. I shouldn’t have suggested you and I go. I didn’t know it was going to set him off like that,” she murmured, making her way outside with him. She approached the stables and retrieved her horse, fastening her cloak around herself again.

Henri nodded and walked beside her in the heavy silence as they headed toward the stables. He too was pondering what he'd need from his own supplies for the trip. The basic things would be easy, but the trouble was packing enough for any kind of situation and still keeping it as minimal as possible.

As they neared the stables, his suspicion was confirmed and there stood his horse ready to go. Her voice broke his thoughts.

"Wha? Oh no, you don't need to apologise for that. I was thinking the same thing and wanted to voice it, but was too anxious." That was actually true. Before Grace had said anything, Henri was filled with jealousy for whatever rider would get to fly to their sister kingdom.

"Trust me, I'm the one that owes you an apology here." He chuckled bitterly, "I shouldn't of gone off like that. I've been stressed and angry with everything going on, so when I saw him strike you.. I just saw red. I lost it."

He mounted his horse and gave a sheepish shrug. "Not really all that sorry for him, but I know how that must've looked to you."

Grace hoisted herself up and over her horse, mounting quite gracefully. She went ahead and took the lead at a trot towards Calistoga Manor. ”Don’t apologize for your outburst. As much as I hate to say it, the reality is that he needs to realize the severity of his crimes. You have to think- when he assaulted me my entire life- he assaulted an underage girl for the vast majority of time time. That right there is worth a stoning, at least,” she sighed a bit sadly, letting Henri fall into pace right next to her. ”I am forever grateful to your parents for the love and hospitality they have shown me in these times. I feel it only fitting I continue to serve them loyally. They’re respectable people, and I need you to know how much their love and support mean to me. Lord knows I could use some kind of mother figure after everything I’ve been through, including the death of my own mother.”

Henri urged his horse on and listened to Grace as she talked. He nodded along to her words, but his eyes stayed stuck on the path ahead. Another well known fact about the prince was that he could never maintain eye contact for very long. However, he still was respectful in conversation.

"Yes, I do understand that." He couldn't bare the thought of Grace as a young girl, suffering at the hands of someone she was supposed to be able to trust. "Agreed- but I doubt he'll get the luxury of a stoning." The crimes of his level were handled far more mercilessly.

Despite what it may seen, the royal family had a reputation for being quite barbaric with the fate of criminals such as Edward. Justice was brought as swiftly as the axe itself. There was no trial, and the same lack of humanity was shown to the criminal just as he neglected from his victims.

"Ah, Grace, they adore you. My mother especially." He chuckled softly in spite of himself.

"A mother figure she can make." Henri smiled as he thought of his youth, giggling and red faced as he played with the Queen. "You've more than earned her heart, believe me. My father as well."

His horse slowed a bit, and he distracted himself by urging the beast onward. "If I'm honest, you've also made your way into mine. I've an infinite amount of respect for you, my Lady. Been through the shadows of what had to be hell, and come out with your head high. I couldn't of done the same."

Grace nodded solemnly, looking over at him. ”Your words mean a lot to me, my Lord. I will strive to be as useful as I can so as to not become a burden to the royal family.” Although she didn’t feel as though she could possibly be a burden to them, she still wanted to show them that she was beyond grateful for the opportunity of a loving family, even if marriage to the Prince wasn’t a possibility. Grace had to admit she would definitely envy any woman who had the utmost honor of becoming Henri’s wife. It would be incredible to marry into this family, but Grace figured she’d take what has already been given to her. Perhaps in light of the situation, King Alfred will stop harassing his son about proposing to her.  Grace felt a sudden weight of sadness rest on her shoulders. That would mean her father wouldn’t joke about it anymore. Abusive as he may be, his favorite thing to do was brag on his daughter to other people.

Grace snapped out of her thoughts as they approached Calistoga Manor, and she felt a whole new wave of cold rain come pouring down. It sent chills up and down her spine to dismount her horse and tie it’s reins to a nearby tree. ”You’re welcome to join me inside,” she spoke gently to Henri, casting her gaze downwards. This was embarrassing.

My Lord

The title didn't feel quite right in Henri's mind. Had it been anyone else saying it, he wouldn't of thought twice. Perhaps even shocked if it wasn't said, as it was a sign of respect after all.

But when the words left Grace's lips, he tensed. It didn't feel right this time.

His eyes further scanned the ground, but he responded to her words with an abrupt, "You're not a burden, Grace. Never will be ."

Following her in a sweet kind of silence, Henri began to look at their surroundings. As they approached the manor, it was clear that he was watching for Edward on the very off color chance that they'd see him.

Marriage was always a tricky subject for the prince. Despite his father's insistent demands that he marry Grace, he'd been suited with a few princesses before. It was never an outright courting, but they were conveniently left alone together on several occasions. Their charming words and bewitching touches meant nothing to Henri in the end. As far as he was concerned, marriage was just not for him.

As Grace dismounted her horse, he did the same. He gave her a soft reassuring smile and tied the stallion to a tree. "Yes, I will do that." He followed her as cautiously as possible, still ready for something to happen at any moment

Grace offered an appreciative smile, grateful for his company. ”I’m not gonna lie, I’m glad you came with me rather than some random guard,” she admitted, walking up to the massive oak doors. She pushed one open to find that the grand foyer and surrounding areas had been trashed. So her father had put up a fight. Or he was still fuming about what had happened at the palace. She cautiously inched forward, drawing a sword and its sheath from a display mounted on the wall. Just to have, it could be useful on the journey.

Grace took a shaky breath and looked around. She had put together a list of things to gather as quickly as possible, but now- now she was drawing a blank. A sudden crash and yelling sounded from upstairs, and Grace drew back slightly, seeking refuge under Henri’s royal command. Her soul knew he would protect her.

Lord Edward Calistoga appeared at the head of the grand marble staircase. ”So my daughter has returned. Perhaps to apologize for her actions earlier?” he raised an eyebrow.

”I will never apologize for telling the truth. The King knows exactly who you are and so will the rest of the kingdom,” Grace spat, a whole new personality coming over her. She was angry. ”I have come to collect my things.”

Henri Earl Ashdowne
FACECLAIM

Henri watched as Grace removed the sword and made a mental note to grab his own when they arrived back at the castle. The sudden crash made him jump, and instinctively he lightly pushed Grace behind him as he stepped forward.

The air was heavy with the anger and hate being radiated between all parties. As Grace spoke back to her father, Henri could hear the oncoming clank of armor. The guards were approaching quickly. The two had arrived a hair too early.

"Edward Calistoga," The prince spoke with every ounce of power he had, speaking to the man as if he were but a peasant beneath his feet. "With the powers that be as my witness, I hereby place you under arrest for your crimes against the good people of Windhelm."

As he spoke, the heavy oak doors were pushed open to reveal several armed guards. They heard Henri's words and pressed forward with swords drawn and cuffs displayed.

"You will be charged to the height of my abilities, and I shall see to it personally that you never walk into the sunlight as a free man once again."

The gaurds went to place the cuffs over the wrists of Lord Calistoga, which raised a second idea in the royals mind. Oh this was a nail in the coffin for sure. Practically giddy with his own power, he continued.

"As of this very moment I, Prince Ashdowne of Windhelm, strip you of your Lordship and reclaim the name of the late Victoire Carlisle to bestow upon our Lady Grace, if she accepts it. Gone will be the Calistoga name."

As things began to settle, Henri came back down to earth as he watched a former family friend get arrested at his own hands. "I have said my piece. May God rest your soul, Edward."

Edward furiously resisted against the guards, demanding a trial. Grace winced. It would actually be incredibly difficult to prove all of her claims. Her mother had been dead far too long to reinvestigate her death, and her father had denied an autopsy.

”There is no need for a trial. Your behavior at the palace today, in front of the royal family, is proof enough that you are not suited for common life, let alone a rich one,” Grace spoke uneasily, moving to the other side of Henri as her father was escorted down the stairs. As he went by, Grace covered the welt on her face from view. As he was taken out, Grace bolted up the stairs to her bedroom to gather her things.

Her sleeping quarters were lavish. Large silk drapes covered each arched window, and heavy oak furniture adorned the room. However, Grace didn’t take the time to admire her bedroom. She pulled out a few of her nicest dresses, some clothes suitable for the journey, and pieces of jewelry and small trinkets her mother had passed down to her. She loaded everything into a silk bag and looked around wildly for anything else she wanted to take from her previous life.

Deciding she didn’t need anything else, she took a shaky breath and turned to Henri. ”I’m ready. Upon his execution, I want this estate burned down and rebuilt as something that will benefit the people,” she decided confidently.

Henri bristled at the demand of a trial, but Grace raised a good point. His father wouldn't want to look at Calistoga any longer, thus there would be no trial. Especially given the severity of the crimes committed here. There was no need to worry.

He moved to the side as the guards passed by, holding back a seething Edwards. As Grace bounded upstairs to retrieve her belongings, the prince spoke briefly to one guards to ensure they had to the proper manpower to escort such a person. Satisfied with the answer, he shut the door and the manor was empty aside from himself and Grace.

Not wanting to be impolite, but still concerned with the girls state of health, he climbed up the stairs and followed where he had seen her disappear to.

Henri stood in the doorframe, watching her with careful eyes. His own bedroom was not unlike her own. Contrary to his parents gold decor, his room was adorned with the finest red velvet. He was quite fond of the material and made sure his room reflected this. It was one of the little things he enjoyed.

"You shall have your wish. I will make it so, even if I have toss the torch myself."

He reached out a hand to gently guide her to the exit of the manor. "Come, we shall be arriving back soon. I trust we've a great meal on the table waiting, and after will be time for rest. Night will fall soon after."

Grace looked down at the hand he had offered and softly accepted, smiling.

At the palace, she had dropped off her things with the servants responsible for getting her room ready, trusting they would be in good hands. She accompanied Henri to the dining hall to meet with his parents. She had since had time to fix her hair and apply some sort of relief to her cheek. She felt slightly better, and having a good meal was going to be lovely.

Grace had never dined with the royals before, and the thought of lavish food for once made her stomach growl. Her father enjoyed spending his money on alcohol and military weapons he himself did not need, so he often forgot about food or basic necessities. He never entrusted his daughter with the plentiful family funds, so they didn’t tend to eat well. Grace hid it well, though. She looked healthy and bright rather than malnourished. She of course wouldn’t bring up that point, for fear that Queen Selena would force her to eat her body weight in food. She certainly wouldn’t allow her on the journey, and Grace couldn’t accept that.
