YOU GOT MUD ON YOUR FACE, YOU BIG DISGRACE [part one: the test]
« on: January 04, 2019, 03:09:27 PM »
//ok so this is part one of a two part event, and this event will have a lot of triggering content happening, most notably in the second thread. Still, this thread will contain references to injuries, violence, death, mutilation, and potentially other things. Anything else will be warned in the posts it's mentioned in, but bear all that in mind.

If Sheogorath had simply said he wanted the brand, maybe things would be different. If he hadn't run off to Flintlock, maybe things would be very different. Cat could understand someone not wanting to mutilate their body, that in itself wasn't treasonous. Sheo had rejected it rather inappropriately, though after reading his journal they realized there was a bit more to it, so perhaps it was understandable.

Even not wanting to be violent for the sake of it - that was fine, Cat didn't like partaking in needless (or perhaps more accurately, purposeless) violence either. Disobeying orders would get you in the shit house, but so far they hadn't issued any such orders to anyone, let alone Sheo. All that would be changing when the time was right, but one thing at a time.

So it wasn't rejecting the brand, it wasn't going soft, neither of those things were what ultimately led to this moment. Well, the going soft had something to do with it, as he had gone too soft. If he'd done what he said he would do in his journal, well that was quite problematic, wasn't it?

Catalyst had ordered that Sheogorath be brought to the steps of the casino. They didn't want to attend to this business inside, not with the direction they were quite sure this would be taking. "So, Sheo. You ran off for two weeks, and I'd like to know where you've been." He could come clean, and perhaps save some level of face, or he could lie and dig the hole deeper.

//please wait for @Sheogorath to reply!

sheogorath
and i say to myself, what a wonderful world
Sheogorath had been introducing his new rabbit, Marshmallow, to his ferret, Twister, when the escort had come for him. The battered, bandaged man struggled to lean down and pluck the white furred bunny from the ground, wincing as pain raced up his ribcage. But he was a bit stronger now. He managed it. Sheogorath placed Marshmallow within his lap, and as the escort held the door open to allow him out of the library, he rolled onward in his fold-able wheelchair. Catalyst wanted to see him. So Catalyst would.

Sheogorath wasn't entirely certain what this was about. He hadn't been home long. He had managed to sneak in a nap, but other than that, Sheogorath had yet to get settled in as he had once been. A yawn parted his maw, and the pain of the expression blossomed with an ache throughout his wounded head. Still very much exhausted, the red haired man forced himself to carry on. As he reached the first step of the casino, he rolled to a stop, his hands placed atop the white bunny in his lap, fingers brushing through ivory fur. Sheogorath couldn't go any higher, not unless someone carried him. He couldn't do skateboard tricks in his wheelchair. But it seemed he wouldn't need to. Catalyst was already there, and as soon as he arrived, they were speaking.

The demand took Sheogorath by surprise. It seemed like something that should have been asked the moment of his return, but instead he was being summoned to the casino to talk about it. A small jolt of unease fluttered throughout the man's chest. Perhaps Catalyst was suspicious. Had Sheogorath left without telling the leader? He couldn't remember. And if he had made some kind of excuse before disappearing, he couldn't remember that either. Damn. Sheogorath swallowed roughly as he thought up some sort of response. Talking was emotionally painful for the man, but he parted his lips anyways.

"I..." A breath to steady himself, a blink of his sharp amber eyes. Why was talking so hard since the accident? "The...the mountains. I went...hunting." A slow voice exited the man's maw, but swallowing his anxiety down, he pushed onward. "A wild d-dog attacked me. I...fell. The bandits found me. Kept me alive. Thought I was still...Underboss." Sheogorath clamped his jaws shut as soon as he had finished, embarrassed by his weak voice, and anxious as to whether or not the lie would pass.

Gabe had a bad feeling about this.

Sheogorath was back. He had been there for the rescue mission, having to slay the bandits and take them down in order to free the former high-rank from his iron-forged cage. He was alive; hurt, but alive. However, he feared that would not be the end of it. It would only be the beginning of what was to come to Sheo.

Catalyst had called for Sheogorath's presence in front of the casino. He was only a mere onlooker, standing on the outskirts of the street and peering up on the steps of the entrance. His blue gaze followed the wheelchair-bound man as he offered an explanation to Catalyst a shaky one, at that. Even a naive boy like him could tell that he was not all that confident in his answer, and a sinking feeling welled in the depths of his stomach. He still did not trust Sheogorath, but the intensity of this situation was growing o v e r w h e l m i n g.

"speech" 'thought' text
tw: mentions alcohol, blood, profanity, themes of violence

Having nothing to do with this situation, Mike had at first thought to just stay out of it completely, not even be there. But there was a gnawing sensation of curiosity that tugged him to the scene, and as he arrived, his attention fell on Catalyst and Sheogorath, the former questioning the later, and Gabriel... standing there and looking quite awkward, then again, Mike felt a bit internally awkward himself, though he was not going to show it.

His brows furrowed slightly, and he folded his hands behind him, straightening his shoulders. It was his go to stance, either that, or arms crossed, though he supposed in this situation, it might be taken as defiant towards Catalyst, and he wasn't really in the mood to fall under the wrath of the current boss. Watching intently, his gaze flickered from Cat to Sheo, brows furrowed. It was obvious that there was more to the story than Sheo let on, well, at least to him. After all, he'd done something like this before.

He grimaced at the memories that came flooding back, and he pushed them away, though the screams, the agony, the blood... reverberated in his head, echoing back and forth. It was a past he was unable to get away from, though if he could truly flee it... he would not. He could not, it was part of him, as disgusting as it was. His gaze flickered to Gabriel who looked a bit uneasy, and perhaps... uncomfortable with the situation. No blame to the boy though, he was young still.

He moved a hand to Gabriel's shoulder, resting it gently on the boy and squeezing softly before letting his hand drop back to behind him. It was an attempt to show the boy he was not alone, and that there was no need to be too worried, afraid, whatever it was he felt. Though he supposed that he, Michael, was not the most reassuring presence.

You could say that Cat had already decided what was going to happen, even as far back as two weeks ago when they found the journal. They would argue that they were only preparing for the worst, that even if it wasn't required then, someday it might be necessary. But deep down, they knew that Sheo would have to work very hard to change their mind, and the unsure, shaking voice wasn't an especially compelling one. "The mountains? I presume you mean our mountains, but that can't possibly be right because even if you did injure yourself in our territory, we would have found you, and if you weren't found, you surely would have starved. Even if you had hunted enough to sustain yourself for so long, surely you would have returned by then. And there's also the matter of the wheelchair, but I suppose the bandits just had it." They didn't really need to be standing over the steps to loom over Sheo; broken as the man was, forced to sit in a wheel chair and no longer able to stand at his full height. It was just another reminder; not just of their health and strength versus his, but a more subtle one too. The casino was a hot spot for the Badlands; Cat was barring entry until they'd been satisfied, not just to the building, but for reintegration into the group, too.

Sheogorath's amber gaze roamed across the others that had gathered. Gabriel and Michael were two familiar faces, though the red haired man wasn't all that friendly with either of them. Then Catalyst began to speak again, and Sheogorath realized he had, perhaps, not made the best of excuses.

"It was...Flintlock's mountains." Sheogorath spoke quietly, his fingers brushing along the white rabbit that was in his lap. "I-I actually went there to...to scout. I thought I c-could bring back some information. B-b-but they set one of their d...dogs after...me. They...dragged me down the mountain. Left me by a road. The b-bandits were there." That damned stutter. The slowness of his voice. His memories were fractured and fragmented, but Sheogorath knew he hadn't had any speech problems before the accident happened. It was frustrating.

lake stood somewhere near the front with dark narrowed eyes and long arms crossed, leaning on one hip. her annoyance, her judgement with everyone and everything taking place, was undeniable. she'd grown up in the wilderness, where you kill or be killed, where if you couldn't walk you died. it was the only life she knew, and she still couldn't understand why they'd taken sheogorath back if he was so crippled, especially after refusing the brand she so desired. lips pressing into a hard frown, she watched the interaction judgmentally.

❝you got taken down by a dog?❞ she said with a snort, disgust evident in her tone. in her eyes, sheogorath wasn't fit for the world they lived in, not if he could be taken down by an animal.

Closer, they were getting closer to the truth now, but the journal indicated very different motivations for Sheo's visit. They lifted their brows and pursed their lips, staying silent for the moment. They reached behind them, pulling the journal from the waistband of their jeans, slapping it against their hands as they looked down at Sheogorath. "You went scouting?" They asked, still slapping their hand with the journal. "It's a shame you didn't get any information."

Lake's comment prompted a frown, but Sheogorath tried to keep his focus on Catalyst. That was when the leader pulled something from the back of their waste-band. The red haired man analyzed the book for a moment. He knew it held some kind of significance. His fractured memories were struggling to put together the pieces, but after a moment of concentration, Sheogorath suddenly realized. He had a journal. He felt the sudden urge to crawl up the steps and snatch it away, to look through its contents, to know what was inside. But judging by Catalyst's behavior, Sheogorath had a good general idea. He had probably written about why he was visiting Flintlock within those pages, and that meant the leader already knew the truth.

There was no sense in lying anymore.

"I..." He lifted his hand away from the rabbit to rub at the back of his neck. His other hand tapped lightly at the arm of his wheelchair, a rapid gesture meant to soothe, but it wasn't working. Sheogorath could feel his heart-rate increase. Was it treason, to apologize to an enemy group? Catalyst could kill him right then and there. Sheogorath wasn't entirely certain that he wanted to die, despite his crippled position. Lowering his gaze, the man spoke once more. "I went to Flintlock to apologize. For b-being a...bad person. But on the way, I had some kind of...accident." The man admitted cautiously. "I was told a...wolf attacked me, knocked me off a cliff. Flintlock patched up my injuries, and set me by...a road to be...found. That's when the b-bandits picked me up." Sheogorath finished, his pupils lingering upon Marshmallow, who still rested within his lap.

Was there really anything that the man could do in this situation? No, so he didn't even try. Michael merely stood, watching the interaction between Sheo and Cat, his eyes sliding to Lake disapprovingly at her intervention before turning his attention back to the interrogation. It was difficult to gauge where this was going, though the man was always trying to figure things out, guess the most probable outcome, etc.

Michael frowned slightly as Sheo continued, he already knew this, because Cat had decided to read the journal of the former Underboss aloud. It seemed an invasion of privacy, though Mike wasn't going to say anything, well, he never said anything in situations like these. Remaining quiet, he folded his arms in front of him, and sighed. He was unsure of where Catalyst would take this, though he had an uneasy feeling that he would not like it.

True, Mike was a hard man, he had killed many people in his life time, he had done unspeakable, unforgivable acts. But even after all that, he still had a shred of humanity left, if only just that tiny amount. And so, he felt a touch of empathy for Sheo in his situation, it wasn't a feeling he thought he'd have again, but there it was, a slight pang in his chest as he watched the stuttering man.

And the truth finally came out. They stopped slapping their hand with the journal, instead letting the book rest against it. "Bad person? You went to apologize for being a Badlander, for doing things on behalf of your group. You were ashamed that you were serving your group? To the point that you would betray them?" They descended one of the stairs; their expression was becoming increasingly harsh. "I'll give you one chance to prove your loyalty. Just the one." "Don't fug it up," their face seemed to say, "you won't like it if you do and you won't get another one."

Even during the most stressful of situations, they usually keep a firm grip on their temper and keep their calm, though when they do snap and lose their temper, it is uncontrollable. They're remarkably observant, often able to deign much from subtle clues in what people say, how they say it and how they act.

Sheogorath couldn't look at Catalyst. He didn't feel ashamed of what he had tried to do, of trying to change, nor did he regret any of it. But he did feel some sadness creep into his thoughts. Yes, he had betrayed his group, the group he had served loyally for years. His friends would abandon him. His home would despise him. Perhaps it would be better to leave. But Catalyst was offering him one last chance to prove himself, it would seem. So Sheogorath managed to lift his head to look at them.

"What...are my options?" The red haired man questioned hesitantly.

He avoided their gaze for most of their little rant, only looking up at them when they presented one final chance to redeem himself. "You could get over your little fear of the brand," this was cruel, they were well aware. Beyond cruel, really, to prey on such a weakness. In truth, both options were cruel, just in different ways. "Or you could slaughter a Lodger. I'll even have someone bring one down here so you don't have to make the trek again." They made it sound almost like a generous offer, though they knew full well that it wasn't. But they couldn't make this easy for Sheo, not when he had so easily betrayed the Badlands. "Personally, I'd recommend getting over your fear of branding." Was it set up so that Sheo would fail? Perhaps, but if he could pass it would be rather remarkable.

APPEARANCE   dress me up and watch me die
⇥ Catalyst is 6'2" tall; they possess a lean and muscular body, one that has a variety of old scars adorning it. They have two piercings, one in their tongue and the other in the cartilage of their left ear. They typically dress in dark colors (favoring jackets with some sort of writing on the back), and their hair is black. They're not all dark, however, as they have pale blue eyes that peer out from beneath medium-sized eyebrows.

PERSONALITY   if it feels good, tastes good, it must be mine
⇥ Catalyst is ambitious, with the cunning and ruthlessness to reach their goals by any means necessary. They can be brutal when they feel it is needed, however when it's not they won't bother. They tend to be rather aloof and apathetic to most things and people, with some very rare exceptions. Provided those around them don't cross a few specific lines, they're content to leave them be, though they've been known to take an interest in some people, which seldom has a positive end for whoever their interest is in. They can be manipulative, and will often encourage people to make bad decisions. Those that stick by them will be rewarded, but those that do not will be cast out, as they've been outcast for their entire life and have learned to appreciate loyalty wherever they can find it. Even during the most stressful of situations, they usually keep a firm grip on their temper and keep their calm, though when they do snap and lose their temper, it is uncontrollable. sheogorath
and i say to myself, what a wonderful world
He could get over his fear of a brand, or murder someone from the group he had been trying his best to apologize to. Those weren't options at all. They were punishments. Sheogorath knew how to tell the difference easily enough. What Catalyst was asking was cruel, and the first option didn't make much sense. Offering a brand to a disloyal member? A symbol of honor, a marking of high standard? It was a lie. A trick. Catalyst would never offer something so important to a fool who knew no loyalty.

That only left one real option. Murder. To go back on his ways, to change himself into the monster he used to be. Trying to be better was so much more difficult than his former life. It would be so easy to slip. Everyone would respect him again. Or at least, they would, with time. It would fix everything. But Sheogorath knew the temptations of demons, their offers never lasted, their tricks were devious, seeking to drag him back into a life of sin. Perhaps his soul was already damned to hell, but that didn't mean Sheogorath would give in to the devil's demands. He was better than that, now. Not in the sense of superiority, but in the sense of goodness over evil. He had to stand by what was right, even if it made him weak. He had to show the world he wouldn't buckle and break under the weight of sin. Sheogorath would no longer bargain with demons. His eternity was already sealed, but he would be defiant until the end.

"I reject your offers." Sheogorath stated with a firmness hardening his previously meek tone of voice. This meant something to him. It meant that he would have to endure, but it also meant that he wouldn't give in to the Devil again. He may be killed, he may be punished, and perhaps that would tear apart his spirit, his will to live, but it wouldn't change his desire to be good. Nothing could break him of that. Sheogorath could be strong even while he suffered from weakness, even while he appeared shattered and crushed. Let Catalyst inflict their worth. Perhaps it was God's plan. Perhaps it was fate. Punishment for all that he had done, and he would accept that. Without hate. Without regret.

Michael's gesture of comfort did not go without notice, though the boy's attention was too glued to the scene before him to hardly acknowledge it. With swelling anxiousness within the pit of his stomach and clammy palms, his gaze darted back-and-forth from Catalyst to Sheogorath. He watched the exchange intently, and internally winced every time the Top Dog continued to g r i l l the wheelchair-bound man for answers.

Eventually, it turned out that everything Sheogorath had said had been a lie. A lie to their face. Gabriel felt himself cringe on his behalf what would Cat do? The boy's breath nearly caught in his throat, his heart starting to pound as he awaited a response from the leader. Was Cat cruel enough to issue a harsh punishment onto someone currently disabled and unable to defend himself? Or was it... was it the right thing to do? This was a tough question to answer, especially when the topic of loyalty and honor was concerned.
