[ we could tame the wild - o, bonfire ]
« on: March 12, 2019, 10:23:29 AM »

usually, addy tried his best to avoid situations that would make him need to socialize. holding conversations with people wasn’t difficult to him, though- the hard part was being nice to people. the redhead could spit insults at people like there was no tomorrow, but to be genuinely kind to someone was what he found difficult. in his previous gang, he’d gotten pretty far by being one of the nastiest shits there-- so far, in the badlands, he wasn’t thriving by any means, but he hadn’t made anyone cry yet from his insults. he’d take that as a way of saying he fit in quite nicely here.

needless to say, if anyone joined him at his late-night, beach-side bonfire, they’d have to deal with a few fiery words. if they couldn’t handle the heat, then fuck ‘em, he at least tried to play nice. he poked at the flames with a stick, just to try and encourage the fire to catch onto more of the logs. it was a decent sized fire, he supposed, but at least a little bonfire beside the ocean could at least give him a sense of calm, for once. after a long day of being pessimistic and giving others a hard time, he supposed it’d be nice to just- do something normal, for once.

he poked the fire a few more times before he simply tossed the stick into the fire, as well, and lowered himself onto the ground. might as well try and see if anyone else was in the mood for late night chatting-- or if they could at least stomach hanging out with addy for longer than they absolutely needed to.

Joseph himself is not particularly social. That's not to say he is at all unfriendly - he is just the least eloquent man on earth, and every interaction he has with another living being tends to be awkward and confusing. It's especially difficult to speak with people his own age. Lucky for him everyone around here seems to be at least 20 years his junior, right? Kids are so much easier to deal with.

He should be resting. His journey here wasn't that severe, but it did take its toll on him, especially after being mugged. He has nothing to his name but the clothes on his back. Rough. Baumann is too restless to be resting. If he lays down, he'll start thinking, and his legs will jitter, his hands will itch... there will be nothing to grab for, no monitor to nervously check, and he will be alone with himself. It's better to just take a stroll. It'll be good to get to know the place better, anyways.

The beach is arguably the highlight of the Badlands. He'd lived further inland, in a small town whose largest body of water was a tiny pond in the local park. Sometimes, senile old men would grab branches from the grass, sit on the bridge arching over the puddle, and pretend they were fishing. Baumann has travelled some in his lifetime, but the ocean was something he's only seen on thousand-dollar vacations or from high up in an airplane. Never unrestricted, never at night, never alone.

It's as barren as it could possibly be now. He wishes he could've seen this place in its heyday.

It takes him a moment before he spots the fire and the little figure sitting beside it across the sand. Baumann, without even thinking he might be intruding on someone's alone time, limps towards Addy. "Evening," he says, lingering awkwardly for a moment, before making the decision to sit across from him. "What're you doing all alone out here?"

"There are people down by the beach." Cat sighed, though it very quickly turned into a yawn. They glanced over their shoulder at Molly, who was standing in the archway. They lifted their eyebrows, a silent okay?. She rolled her eyes. "They've got a fire."

Cat faced her properly, their stomach grumbling as their attention shifted entirely away from the sandwich they'd been preparing. "Okay. Is it out of control?" They had a history of not making the best decisions with fires, mainly making it the responsibility of known pyromaniacs to make sure things didn't get out of hand.

She shook her head again. "No, I just wanted to go down and see."

They stared at her blankly for a second, then waved a hand at her. They returned to their food. "Then go. You don't need my permission to go to the beach."

Molly walked over, her hands on her hips. "I know that, I wanted to see if you'd go with me. Bonfires are fun, we should do something fun." They were hungry, and tired, and doing anything other than eating and sleeping didn't sound especially fun, but if she wanted to do this... Well, it didn't sound like she was mad at them anymore.

"So you're done being mad?" They asked, beginning to eat while looking at her expectantly. It didn't seem like her to drop something that had pissed her off, not one bit.

She scowled. "No, but I don't want our whole relationship to be you hiding things and me getting angry at you. So come on, we don't have to stay long." Cat groaned but nodded, and as much as they'd rather be going to sleep, their mom's smile made it worth it. They followed her out of the house and down to the beach, which luckily wasn't very far. It didn't seem much like the party that Molly thought it would turn into, but that suited Cat just fine.

"Good evening, gents. This is Molly. Molly, this is Addy and Dr. Braumann." They pointed to each person as they spoke, then took a bite of their sandwich. "Nice fire you've got going."

addy had wanted company. he wouldn’t have struck up a bonfire if he hadn’t known it’d draw attention. however, part of him had been mildly surprised when an old man came hobbling over towards him. baumann. huh. he’d never really talked to the man, but had heard his name by word-of-mouth.

“isn’t it a little past your bedtime?” it was the first remark out of his mouth, with the usual not-too-friendly addy douglas charm. addy’s reputation with older, more adult figures wasn’t necessarily the best. however, deciding he shouldn’t drive away company too quickly, he simply settled for answering the man’s question; what was he doing?

 “havin’ a fuckin’ party.”

mainly to save himself from complete loneliness, he supposed. the redhead didn’t want to be alone. his gaze turned over his shoulder to peer at cat and - molly as they appeared. he didn’t really know much about molly, if anything- but he did know that cat was insanely fun to bother from time to time. the moment he’d met him he’d decided to give him hell- because why the fuck not?

"hey, cat- looks like you're finally deciding to be social, for once,” he decided to say about them, glancing at the other with a smirk before turning his gaze back over to the fire. “can’t say you’re off to the best start, but at least you tried. have- fuckin’ booze, or something?”

If you wanted to be alone, it wouldn't really make sense to put up a beacon as to your location, would it? Something that would attract attention, draw people out, if it wasn't a party and it wasn't a distraction or an attempt to stay warm, why do it?  They didn't know about Baumann, but it definitely was getting late for Cat, who liked getting a minimum of eight hours every night, more if they could get away with it. What could they say? They liked their beauty rest, and if it weren't for this little gathering, they were quite confident they'd be asleep in the next fifteen minutes or so. Oh well. It made Molly happy, and that's what really mattered.

"And you didn't bring drinks?" They shook their head and tsked, but in truth they really couldn't care less. "I don't care. It's not like I'd be drinking anyway." Their mother shot them a skeptical look, not fully believing that the vice didn't actually entice them. "When am I not social, exactly?" It felt like they spent all day talking to people; a lot of it was giving orders, but still. "I have, in the past. Dumbs me down enough to talk to stupid people, I guess, but other than that it's deeply unpleasant." Their most recent brush with mind-addling drink had been especially bad.

“you don’t talk to people because you want to,” he pointed out, turning his gaze to the fire as he decided, “you talk to them ‘cause you fuckin’ have to.” and if that wasn’t cat in a nutshell, then he didn’t know what was. not that he was all-knowing about the amazing life of cat, but he wasn’t ashamed to admit (to himself and only to himself) that a part of him, deep down, liked them. the man was unpredictable, unlike most people that the redhead happened to meet throughout the years. unpredictable was exciting, and there was nothing better than always being on the tip of your toes.

“want a smoke, then?” he offered as he dug his own pack out, taking a cigarette from the cartridge and lighting it up rather quickly. “or is that something that you find so fuckin’ unpleasant too?” he poked fun at the other, holding the cig in the corner of his mouth as he stuffed his cigarettes and lighter back in his pocket. then, he took a long drag of the stick before blowing the smoke out into the air, the nicotine just putting him at ease more than he would’ve thought.

Cat cast a long look at Molly, who was frowning faintly. "And you know that how? Do you have ESP?" Hah, not likely. One could be perceptive, maybe (they were perceptive enough that in the past they'd fooled gullible people into believing they themself had it), but there was nothing truly extraordinary about it. Nothing supernatural.

"I want to eat my goddamn sandwich." Okay, this was not helping the cause of "fun and social", but at the moment, they were too tired to care. "I'll have one." Molly interjected, prompting Cat to stare at her in disbelief. "Since when do you smoke?" They had seen her drink on occasion, but never put those lung-blackening cancer sticks to her lips. "I don't think that's a can of worms you want to open, Scott." Floored. That's it. They were positively fucking floored.

“esp? is that a - fuckin’ disease or something?” addy had street smarts, but when it came to anything else, he liked to say that he simply lacked much of a formal education. however, simply shrugging it off, he simply took a puff of smoke. “i just know everything, cat. you should know that by now.” ha. what a joke.

the redhead hadn’t really interacted with molly much- but her actually interjecting, wanting to have a cigarette much to cat’s disbelief. he couldn’t help but laugh to himself at cat’s look of complete shock. oh, this night was just getting better and better by the moment. “you know what, molly? you’re alright,” he mused as he held out a cigarette for her to take. “here.” he held his lighter out for her to light her cigarette before gesturing to cat as he pocketed it. “maybe you should take more after her.”

They had to hold back a snort laugh. "If you knew everything, you'd know that ESP is extrasensory perception. Sixth sense?" They'd like to think that they were well balanced between book-smart and street-smart. They'd spent a great deal of time cooped up studying, but they'd also spent a surprising amount of time hanging around in bars and seedy places.

Their disbelief only grew as they watched Molly take the cigarette and place it between her lips, then bend down to light it from the offered lighter. She straightened up, made eye contact with Catalyst, then took a smooth drag. They could not believe this. They were completely and utterly astounded. They opened their mouth to say something, but several moments went by before any words came out. "I'm going to bed." If it wasn't already apparent that they were tired, their voice sounded positively exhausted.

"Oh, come on. Stay and have fun." She said, trying and failing to stifle a laugh at the look on their face. They'd never understand why this seemed fun to her. "Watching you kill your lungs isn't fun." Molly took the cigarette out of her mouth, though she kept her hold on it. She sighed and pushed her hair back from her face with her free hand, debating saying something but remaining silent. Cat turned and started walking away.

//don't be such a buzzkill Cat
anyway my next post will prob be on Molly's sub since Cat's leaving (unless someone stops them)

mordecai wasn't sure what he was expecting to find when he approached the beach. the antisocial part of him had hoped that there wouldn't be anyone or anything around, but the familiar scent of charred wood, along with the lightly muffled voices, proved otherwise to the tired doctor. yeah, maybe if he really had wanted to be alone, he could have kept on his way and avoided any chance of socializing, but he couldn't deny that he was simply bored. sleep was never something that came easy to the man, and doing nothing in all that extra time awake would easily drive him nuts. why else would he be out at this late hour, if not secretly looking for a bit of trouble?

what he did find was nothing short of interesting. the first person he saw, rather suddenly, was none other than a worn-looking Catalyst trudging away from the shore. Mord couldn't exactly tell whether their defeated attitude was brought on from exhaustion or the result of a salty interaction with one of the shadows surrounding the nearby flames, but he knew better than to look at them for answers. However, the idea of someone managing to get on the big, bad cat's prickly side enough to send them marching home like a frustrated teenager, did make mord far more curious than concerned. "cat," he muttered in acknowledgement, a smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth as they passed by. as far as he knew, there was only one person currently in the badlands that could possibly draw that sort of reaction from their fearsome leader- and sure enough, he saw them amongst the couple of strangers that occupied the shore.

now, he recognized the redhead from one of their meetings, although not enough to remember the kid's name. From what he could tell, as well as from what he'd heard, the boy's fiery locks reflected much of his personality; hot and obnoxious. mord was definitely not fond of the loud, aggressive types- even the more quiet, brooding types like mike put him on edge, let alone someone so outwardly rude. it made sense that he and his lanky, know-it-all partner found company in one another, they seemed like two insufferable peas in a pod to him.

then, there was the old man. of him, mord knew even less. he did hear something about the man being a doctor, but apart from that fact, he seemed to be an enigma. mord had met his fair share of older practitioners, and from his experiences, usually all they would talk about was work, or the good old days, and he was not interested in either, to be honest.

and finally, molly was there. the unofficial queen of the badlands. now obviously, her relationship with cat was very intriguing, to say the least. he could only rely on certain rumors here and there about their past, but if one thing was for certain, there was much more there than meets the eye. especially in this case; mord certainly did not take the woman for a smoker, of all things. It was almost alarming, if he didn't already have some slight suspicion of her from day one. he supposed Cat had to inherit certain traits from somewhere, of course, but, being out here at this time of night, cigarette in hand, with a bunch like this? damn.

Maybe it was due to tiredness, or being too comfortable knowing cat was no longer around to prevent him from being too much of a cheeky piece of shit, but words were already out of his mouth. "y'know, i'm not sure what's hotter; that, the fire, or the top of your head, kid," the man tilted his head, eyeing addy's bright locks. sure, making fun of the ginger was a bit basic for him, but he almost wanted to see if the boy would take his casual remark seriously or not.

She wasn't a smoker. Not the sort of smoker you might normally picture, anyway, going through a pack a day and having a raspy voice and bad breath. No, Molly was a social smoker, one that would light up a cigarette if and when she was around people that were partaking. The same was true with alcohol; not a big drinker unless in a social setting.

It had never been enough to get her completely addicted in the past, but now as a calm settled over her, it almost sounded like a worthwhile habit. Almost. Cat's reaction to the whole situation put a damper on that; their relationship was strained enough as it was. Still, she wasn't going to let a perfectly good cigarette go to waste, so as they stormed back towards the house, she took another drag.

And there was Mord, commenting on the hotness of the fire, Addy's red hair and... her (presumably her smoking). Molly rolled her eyes. "The fire." She said, puffs of smoke exiting her mouth, floating in Mordecai's direction (not on purpose) before getting carried away by the wind. Her voice might have been deadpan, her words dismissive, but some part of her was flattered. She hid that part.

addy should’ve seen that coming. the shock had been so obvious on their face. to see catalyst turning around and leaving, though, had honestly had him mildly surprised. he simply took a long drag of his smoke before mumbling, lips around the cigarette, “what’s their fuckin’ problem?” guess he didn’t really know the history between cat and molly. maybe it was best if it stayed that way.

just like that, though, there was another newcomer to take catalyst’s place. ah. right. the medic. he never really talked to the guy, and judging by the first words he’d ever heard spill from the man’s mouth, he was somewhat grateful he’d avoided him until now. still didn’t push away his urge to kick the guy’s ass. as if ginger jokes hadn’t been more despised by the redhead.

so what was hotter? molly smoking, the fire, or his hair? molly had simply said fire. addy simply blew smoke out into the air before muttering, “dunno. want me to throw your ass in the fire so you can figure it out, yourself?” the remark had been casual enough, but the image of throwing mordecai into the fire? if only addy could actually do that without getting his ass kicked by catalyst.

Mord refrained from allowing his smirk to become a grin at molly's response, although a glint of satisfaction was visible in his flame-lit gaze. Yeah, it was a pretty terrible conversation starter, and an even worse attempt to hit on someone that he wasn't even attracted to, but, he supposed, that was kind of the point. there wasn't much of his own truth behind it- well, maybe the ginger bit- but the idea of saying something stupid and terrible just for the sake of it was all he could do to make this rag-tag social event-thing somewhat entertaining. at his expense, at this point in the night? fuck it, why not. cat can sue him.

hearing addy's reply to the dig, however, was more than exactly what he wanted to hear. the urge to smile at the kid was becoming harder to resist, but the man sensed a challenge. of course, judging by the redhead's prickly sense of humor, he definitely wouldn't put it past him to make that threat a reality. mord never really considered death by fire; he knew it was one of the worse ways to go, and he wasn't exactly a fan, but it would no-doubt be a memorable one- burned into their memory, one could say.

yeah, it was going to be that bad. where's the liquor when he needed it?

raising his eyebrows in a mocking sense of surprise, he returned his focus back onto the top of addy's head. "oh, i don't know, molly, he seems to be getting warmer. i-is that smoke i see?" from the time it took him to raise his finger at a spot in the air, his façade had faltered, and a smug grin had creeped across his face. god, he was running on a single braincell tonight.

//fr tho it is i, who is on the one braincell, and it is, in fact, burning
