[ raindrops fell down from the sky - joining ]
« on: April 16, 2019, 12:55:44 PM »

if someone had told him a few months ago that he’d be climbing a snowy, cold mountain, he would’ve had his doubts. harrison and scaling a mountain didn’t exactly come hand-in-hand. harrison and extensive physical activity didn’t come hand in hand. so yeah, of course he would’ve had his doubts about just up and scaling anything, nonetheless a mountain. now, he was just glad that he had warm clothes to make the climb. that was what he told himself as he shuffled closer to the top of said mountain, puppy in tow. he held her inside his coat, head just barely poking out the top as she curled up, peacefully asleep. the longer he started to carry her, the more heavy she began to feel. he didn’t know how much longer he could keep going like this.

hearing about flintlock had almost been heaven-sent, though. it was worth pushing through the cold if everything he’d been told about the place was true. there was safety. good people. and, apparently, a lot of animals that clover could play with. there seemed to be no place with better promise than that. too many times had harrison ran into the wrong people at the worst possible times. now, though, there was finally a place that held promise. a place that could be considered home.

it had taken a while to reach the lodge, but when it came into sight, he couldn’t help but start to grin. “clove,” he softly uttered, gently rocking her awake. “looks like we’re here.” slowing to a stop when he saw people in the distance, he unzipped his coat just enough for clover to come crawling out. she stretched her legs before hesitantly starting to walk forward in the snow, not venturing too far without looking over her shoulder to her owner. harrison smiled softly, gently scratching her ear as he walked past and towards the group of people.

he could feel his heart racing away in his chest. the last time he'd decided to join a group, things hadn't gone quite right for him. now, though, he thought that this was his last chance. he couldn't support himself and clover on his own anymore. he needed help. there was no reason in turning around now, especially when clover was practically galloping ahead towards the group. he had to pick up the pace just to stay next to her.

once he was close enough, clover slowed down, truly showing her shy nature. that was when he slowed to a stop, wringing his hands together anxiously as he got closer. he swallowed hard before mustering up a small, soft smile and saying, “hi. is- there a way i could join?” there was no way to word it correctly, and honestly harrison hadn’t thought it through that well. he might as well be straight, cut to the chase about why he had come all this way to see the lodge. "i'm harrison, by the way and this-" he gestured towards the doc, "-is clover."

・゚✧ — If someone had told Ellie that her older brother would be climbing a snowy, cold mountain, she would've had doubted it highly. For years she'd assumed he'd died of mysterious causes - well, it was what right-hand men John and Tom had informed her mournfully when the pair of them still resided with the Carbines. It was the risk that the two of them took, seeking refuge in gang lands, but all Ellie wanted to do was meekly follow the two men in her life - Mickey and Harrison - to safety. Still traumatized after what had happened with her mother and older sister, it wasn't surprising for her to feel so strongly about wanting to keep her loved ones safe.

There were times where Elinor had felt so alone, and she owned Harrison so much. He was there for her during her darkest moments and, even though they didn't always get on swimmingly, Harrison still got her. Perhaps it was due to the fact that they were so alike that sometimes they'd clash. But, with that, also came the knowledge that the both of them tended to understand what they were going through. Two sensitive souls in a world so cruel. It could only take grace remain so kind in such a harsh circumstance.

He was supposed to be dead.

And, until this very day, Ellie was convinced of the fact. She'd been told clearly that Harrison was dead and that nothing could've been done to retrieve his body and that they were so sorry for her loss.

But they'd lied to her.

She was stood on the porch when she saw him, her eyes originally landing on the golden puppy that dashed through the snow, her own three massive st. bernard puppies wriggling to greet the retriever themselves. "No, Laurel, over here." She sung quietly as the one puppy began to try lumber down the steps of the lodge, instead shuffling backwards before resting on the ground, hind in the air. Eyes flitted from the retriever puppy to the group of Flintlockers the puppy approached, then to the man who owned the dog, and then her blood ran cold. The look of realization riddled her features, shock paralyzing her as eyes were unable to blink.

"I'm Harrison, by the way, and this is Clover." This couldn't be true. Her bottom jaw jutted out, lip wobbling very slightly as she was frozen on the spot, one hand splayed out as she grasped onto the railing on the porch. She finally looked down to the ground, trying her best to acknowledge what had just happened, but nothing seemed to help her comprehend what she'd just witnessed. She frowned, trying to piece together pieces of a puzzle that were perished in the flames of years that'd gone by without Harris in her life.

He was supposed to be dead.

Finally, body was weak as she went to climb down the steps, eyes unable to tear away from her older brother. And finally, when Harrison turned his head and looked at Ellie, she froze on the spot once again, this time only several feet away. She sucked in a deep breath through her nose, exhaling again passed her lips before finally, shakily, she spoke, "Five. Years." She was silent again, lowering her head again very slightly as tears sprung to her eyes with confusion and bafflement. She swallowed hard, hands trembling against her side until she began to clench them into fists. "J... I... I though- Mmm." She tried to speak, but shock silenced her, leaving her only able to squeak the very last word.

One last shaky breath, gritting her teeth uncomfortably and squeezing her eyes shut to allow tears to fall into the snow, before she finally raised her head again, "I thought... Five years. You were dead. You let me grieve. Why- How could you do that to me?"

harrison hadn’t been expecting anything from flintlock except possibly getting welcomed into their ranks. and, if they hadn’t greeted him with welcome arms and let him and clover join, he would’ve at least hoped they’d give him a sled so the journey back down was easier than the trek to the top. clover had already caught sight of three huge st. bernards (they could be friends, maybe?). that, and she was already excitedly sniffling every single person that came within a five foot radius of her-- life would be so good for them here, especially for her. food had been getting so sparse lately, and winter had definitely been almost impossible to survive on their own. flintlock was a wish come true in harris’s books.

it wasn’t until his gaze lifted to the owner of the aforementioned st. bernard puppies as she neared that he felt his previous anxiety and nervous excitement almost - flatline. everything felt like it had stopped in that moment, and harrison felt like he’d forgotten how to breathe because his little sister was right there. his little sister, who had meant the world to him in a world that didn’t care for either of them.

there was the need to run over and hug her, and also the need to keep his distance. she’d had her chance to leave the carbines with him. he’d waited for weeks for her and mick to turn up, only to realize that they never would come. in his mind, ellie had chosen the carbines over him, chosen mickey and the carbines over him. that had definitely added insult to injury. perhaps that was why, as ellie slowed to a stop, he took one small step back, both out of shock and merely to keep his distance. she was his sister, but his sister that had a lot of making up to do, in his opinion. but then-

“i thought… five years. you were dead. you let me grieve.”

his lips parted in surprise. tears pricked his eyes and he shook his head in disbelief. she thought that he’d been dead this entire time? he couldn’t process that, this whole time, the reason she hadn’t went out in search for him was because she’d just assumed he was gone. it was hard to fathom, after years of seeing his own side of the story, that what he had formerly believed as truth suddenly warped into something completely different right before him.

“how could you do that to me?”

that was when the look of surprised dissolved, something flashing in his eyes- hurt, slight irritance. “how could i do that to you? how could you do that to me?” he turned the question back, his voice wavering dangerously as he tried to hold back the tears. “tom, john. caine- they wanted me to… to kill you, ellie.” the word felt so bitter on his tongue. he could feel the tears slip down his cheeks, closing his eyes tightly and clenching his hands into fists as he uttered out, ”a-and when i refused, tom and john-” images of being thrown into the lake flashed behind his eyelids, to the point that he had no choice but to open his eyes back to ellie again. “tried to kill me, instead.”

“i-i waited for you and mickey to come- b-but you never--” you never came. he couldn’t possibly finish the sentence, his breath hitching miserably as he turned his gaze away. he swallowed hard and, after that, he didn’t even know what he could say. his heart was already telling him what to say, though, as he said, “i missed you... i missed you so much.” they had a lot of catching up to do, a lot of piecing together to do, but harrison thought that this was at least a start.

Michael Reynolds
Dallas Darrow
//tw for domestic violence/murder in the second paragraph

The idea of losing her big brother was unthinkable to her. The idea of losing anyone in her family was unthinkable, but none more so than Michael. As much as he bugged her, she knew that he kept her safe and only wanted to protect her. The unthinkable had already happened, they had gotten separated from their family, and now she felt like she was lost at sea, the only thing keeping her from drifting away entirely was him, anchoring her down.

If something happened to Dallas, he didn't know what he'd do. She was all that he had left to hold onto after what their mother had done, and now keeping her safe was all that he had. That and getting Linus to safety. He hoped, he hoped that Cathline wouldn't hurt her own son, but she had killed her own husband. He didn't know what she was capable of anymore.

With a great deal of reluctance, Michael had let Dallas go out alone to check the traps that were somewhat near to the lodge, with the promise that she'd radio in once she was on the way back. Well she did, so he headed outside to meet her, and there was Ellie and a stranger. A stranger that bore a surprising resemblance to her and seemed to know her. It felt like he was intruding on something, and he was about to go back into the Lodge when Dallas appeared, oblivious as always, waving cheerfully and calling out "Hello!" He sighed, then beckoned her over to him. Maybe he could get her inside before she caused too much of a disturbance.

"speech" 'thought' text
tw: mentions blood, profanity, violence

This seemed particularly private, and not a conversation that Mary should really be a part of, but that didn't stop her from being here right now, if only to provide Ellie with a bit of stability in this... interesting situation. She'd heard about half of the conversation, and it was all pretty bad, well at least it seemed to be that way.

The slender woman was wrapped up in a nice warm coat, her face a bit pinker from the nip in the air, and her hands stuck in her pockets. She had her shotgun slung over her shoulder, though there didn't seem to be much need for her weapon at the moment. Eyes studied the situation, and Mary gauged it best to remain silent for the time being, it didn't seem like interjecting in this very personal conversation would be in the best of taste.

(( tw for mentions of death ))

very similarly to Harrison, not once in Brendan’s life has he expected himself to be living atop some mountain with a crap ton of people he barely knows, worrying about other groups and the like. In fact, at one point in time Brendan has thought that his life was just going to consist of him and his parents; the future wasn’t even a thought for him, it was just the present. After all, he was only...what, twelve? Yeah—twelve When his parents died, so it wasn’t like he had to be fussing over the future, anyways. He was naive then, stupid, and...yeah. Nowadays he fricken hates it when he thinks about that kind of crap such as his past self.

Siblings, though...Brendan doesn’t have any, and he’s never ever going to get any. Sure, he guesses there’s like...adopted siblings or whatever, but even then he absolutely refuses to consider anyone here a sibling, let alone anything remotely close to family; he’s already nearly impossible to get close to, so the idea of someone being that close to him is just...ugh. It makes him cringe somehow. Granted, there’s hope in the lodge, but hope’s just a baby—she can’t do much. As for his chickens, he’s known them his entire life, so...yeah, of course he’s going to forever consider them super close to him. (Honestly, his chickens are his family, since they’re all that remains of it; they mean the whole world and so much more to him, it’s flat-out impossible to describe strongly enough.)

To be quite honest, Brendan has zero idea what on earth he’s walking into as he saunters into the scene, staff in hand as he points the tip of it at the stranger. He wants to demand the stereotypical "who are you" question, but——something holds him back. Staring at ellie, then the stranger, then back at ellie, he gulps, confusion tracing his face hesitantly as the scene drags on. Then, it dawns on him, and he widens his eyes a bit at a sudden thought...because Wait a minute—

do they know each other?

And Judging by their conversation—yes. Blinking, the fourteen-year-old sharply sighs, continuing to drown under a blanket of awkwardness before shifting his staff to only one hand as he uses the other to grab his walkie-talkie. Might as well do something useful here, right? He fricken despises staring and gawking, anyways...

Pressing the speak button, he pauses, waiting for a quick moment of silence before grumbling into it: "stranger at the border." then, he puts it away, his free hand now grabbing back hold of the staff; pointing it at the stranger, he takes a step forward, placing himself beside ellie. "who are you?" he demands, voice stern (he doesn’t give a flying crap if this is a personal conversation or whatever, it’s an even more important question that needs to be answered).

TW mention of death

There was something pleasant about siblings. What? Was it surprise that Daniel had one? That he'd not been the only child, and if things had gone right . . . if the girl who claimed to care about her didn't try to beckon her to run away from him. . . she'd still be alive today. He was emotionally inept to many many things, but like Sarah, any time he thought about Theodora Williams his heart broke. It was never not painful to think about her.

She was the first person he could ever say he cared about. It was them against the world , their distrust towards their parents is what prompted them closer. Of course it'd been for different reasons. While in the eyes of their father , he couldn't do anything right , their mother excusing his behavior as Daniel's fault , their perfect daughter did something so sinful that for days on end he doesn't see her outside of her room but to eat. Falling in love with her best friend. A girl. After Calla and Teddy got caught kissing in her room, they'd willed her to never see her again and to, in a sense 'pray the gay away'. He thought he'd done her favors by getting rid of two useless souls who didn't love their kids for them , but it only made her terrified. For what exactly? He's not sure. If he wanted to kill her now, he would have. Maybe should have, so he wasn't able to give her the opportunity to attempt to run.

Of course she didn't get very far.

Maybe he was doing her a favor. Fifteen and she'd saw the world through a similar lens that Ellie had. He wanted her to endure that optimistic nature ( because people like her are more easy to manipulate ) and although she promised she would, being around Calla's toxicity, feeding her lies about her own brother made her lose what made her her. In the end, he wished that were true but now it's only a pawn of his past. Something that he's survived. He makes no effort to mention her to anyone, not even to Ellie, so why is he surprised he hadn't heard of a allegedly dead sibling he isn't sure. Then again, they're not talking much. Not since he's come back from Bluestem Prairie.

He'd volunteered to patrol this evening, bundling up in preparation for just that. He's found himself being readily more willing to participate despite his hatred for the cold because he needs to remain on Hayley's good side and time alone most of the time allowed him to think of Kit without association of Ellie wandering the lodge somewhere getting more and more notably pregnant by day. As he steps out of the lodge, he's taken to see that a crowd has formed that also includes his 'beloved'. Emotions are exchanged between her and an unknown looking man. Having missed the conversation, he tenses up immediately —

Could she? No. It's shameful that he hopes that she is having an affair, that way it makes her a lot easier to handle. As he approaches, he could see the slight resemblance. Ellie, having a brother? His observations are surprisingly spot on.

"Hey kid, I'm sure he appreciates the warm welcome, but it's pretty obvious to me this isn't necessary." He deadpans. Hadn't Brendan greeted him similarly? Since then, he's learned his name from his reputation alone. The kid actually harbors a reputation. For being a brat, but that was beside the point. He could appreciate the kid's desire to protect his home and all.

Daniel doesn't worry about what he might be interrupting. "Cute dog." That's to get their attention. When he makes sure he has it, he grins, "Manners. Name's Daniel, also known as Ellie's amante. That's lover in Spanish. Or French. Couldn't confirm that for you." He falls into step next to Ellie. "As lovely as this is, I just have to warn you the big boss will be soon and she's been kind of. . . emotionally unstable. So if you have weapons, surrender them now or whatever, or else this kid might hit you with his stick and..." He laughs breathily. "...we don't want to embarrass him so."

hayley could understand the shock that came with the arrival of an unexpected sibling, to some degree. the difference between ellie's situation and her own was that ellie had thought her brother was dead, and hayley had just assumed her own didn't exist. she hadn't had any memory of miles, but the only way she could really confirm her relation to the man, to her half brother, was his resemblance to her daughter, and his knowledge of the dog tags she wore tucked under every shirt. no one knew about them, not even most flintlockers, but he'd known. he'd known every word they'd said, he'd known the date on it, he'd known the story behind them that even she didn't.

they hadn't magically bonded, though. no, he'd missed her entire life, she'd missed his entire life. they were practically strangers with some shared dna, but he was family. he was family, and that sort of mattered to her.

so hayley fully intended to stay quiet as she approached, eyes shifting between the siblings, hands tucked into her pockets. she eyed the pair curiously, listening quietly as she drew closer, right up until she heard daniel. calling her emotionally unstable. then the polite curiosity on her features vanished, instead replaced by mild annoyance, a brow arched, and she paused behind him. ❝i think you mean pregnant, and right behind you.❞ she said quietly, before stepping around him, close enough in an attempt to collide her own with his, before stopping behind brendan. ❝you can stand down, brendan.❞ she added to the teenager, eyes lingering on harrison curiously.

・゚✧ — Two siblings stood so far apart, it felt as if there were oceans between them. But with glazed eyes, Ellie watched over, bewildered and faint from shock. A part of her wanted to rush over and embrace Harrison in her arms, pull him close, feel the warmth of life rushing through his veins. Her brother was not dead. Not. Dead. But, she couldn't move from where her feet were rooted into the ground, unable to step closer else she could drown in those choppy waters between them. The distance simply was just too far for her to row across to meet him and so she'd stay still, watching his face contort into a million and one confused emotions. Like her. The distance between them seemed farther than ever before. Whatever she had once had with Harrison crumbled with time, much like a withering rose decaying.

Others in the lodge began nearing to two siblings and, in a moment where she felt that everything she'd once known had been a lie, the four walls around her had come tumbling down around her. Suddenly, out in the open wasn't enough to stop her from suddenly feeling claustrophobic, heart pounding against her ribs and a sickening feeling rising in her gut as Harris turned her own question onto her. What did he mean? She didn't understand what she had done wrong. "What?" She squeaked, a grimace lacing her features as eyebrows knitted together. And then, she felt as if she'd been hit by a tonne of bricks.

Tom and John.

The men that had stolen Mick away from her. The men that had stolen her Harry away from her. They stole everything away from her.

Tears sprung to her eyes at the realization, and her head spun with the news. She needed to take a seat. A slow breath rattled through her body, tears finally breaking their banks and streaming down her porcelain skin like rain dribbling down a window. If a heart could physically break, then hers would've been shattered by now. They tried to kill her, and since they couldn't do that... They'd tried to kill Harrison instead. "Oh my god." She choked out, mainly because no other words allowed to pass her lips.

And then, if she didn't think it could get any worse... It did. One thought lead to the other, much like a domino effect, and -

Mickey had let this happen to them.

The men behind this were his best friends. They tore Harry away from her. They stole Mick from her reach. Everything that she had was gone because of those men. She had everything. She had absolutely everything. Teeth clenched together, nodding her head slowly to herself as she averted her gaze to look away. She couldn't watch her brother for another moment. Her life had been destroyed by those cruel men; she couldn't even let herself look at Harris without her heart breaking all over again for him. For them. "I missed you." Harrison said, and Ellie turned her head to look at her brother once more, nodding her head sharply though tears spilled down her cheeks.

But then, people were beginning to crowd around her too much for her liking. In fact, the walls had all fallen down around her; she felt so trapped. She had to escape this for a moment. Dallas greeted Harrison, and next Brendan spoke too, stepping by her side. Mary was there too, observing, along with Michael. Next, Daniel halted beside her, but she felt little satisfaction from the comfort of his presence. This revelation was simply much too great for her to feel anything but confusion and hurt. She folded her arms across her chest, pressing her lips together tightly as she felt her anxiety close to bubbling over.

Daniel began to speak so confidently, then Hayley responded, and Ellie fluttered her eyes closed as she lowered her head, trying to take a moment to relax. But then-

"Stop talking." She was firm as she snapped, sucking in a deep breath before allowing her eyes to open, bloodshot and teary, as she peered around at those around her. She was silent for several moments before she squeaked, "I need to sit down, I don't feel good." She wiped away her tears, taking a few steps back before pausing, "Be kind to my big brother. He's done nothing wrong." He finally ordered sternly before pacing swiftly back indoors, head low as she wiped at her falling tears.

all this time spent thinking ellie had betrayed him, that she’d chosen a gang and a boyfriend over her own brother, only to figure out that she hadn’t been aware of what had happened… harrison didn’t even know how he could react. he didn’t know how someone should react in this situation. ellie was crying, he was crying, and while they used to be so close, harrison couldn’t remember ever feeling so far away from her. they had both changed so much over the course of five years, so many things had been wedged between them over that time; would they ever be able to be as close as they used to be? closing his eyes, he took a deep breath as ellie choked out a weak, “oh my god.” harrison hadn’t been ready for this; ever since they’d parted he’d dreamed for this moment, and now it wasn’t at all going how he’d wished it to.

he’d told her he missed her, and watching ellie merely nod before looking away caused him to feel almost sick to his stomach. this wasn’t ellie. it couldn’t be. the ellie he knew would’ve-- would’ve at least said something back. a lump formed in his throat, and he turned his gaze away and stared at clover, who had busied herself with greeting all of the people beginning to crowd around the scene-- starting with the girl who had been quick to cheerily greet the new pair. he couldn’t help but force a smile to his lips, using his coat sleeve to wipe at his eyes as he nodded in this girl’s direction, clover quick to trot over and sniff her.

next was someone pointing a staff at him and asking who he was. all he could muster was a quick, “harrison.” he tried to keep his voice from shaking, but he had to admit it still wavered from the previous tears, his lower lip trembling slightly. this was all so overwhelming; what he’d thought would be an innocent trip to join this group suddenly became so much more. it was good news, though. if that was the case, then, why did he feel so miserable? he curled in on himself just the slightest bit, wishing he could become so small he could almost disappear from this moment.

not that he had long to, before ellie’s -- amante(?) made an appearance. that only made him even more confused. this really wasn’t the ellie he remembered. especially after she snapped at who he assumed was the leader. he couldn’t help but swallow hard as she walked away, with a simple request to be kind to him. watching her walk away made him almost burst into tears all over again. while years on his own had sort of strengthened him, there were still parts of him that were so soft that it could just break that steeled exterior.

he hesitated a moment before he slowly pulled out his weapons. they weren’t much - a gun and a pocket knife - but they’d served their purpose while he’d needed them. “um- here,” he offered, unsure who to really surrender the weapons to, but deciding daniel was the guy since he’d made the suggestion. clover joined him at his side as he stepped forward to hand the weapons to daniel, his gaze naturally turning towards hayley after the fact.

“i’m sorry,” was the first thing he blurted out, mainly because he didn’t know what else to say to her except voice the guilty that he felt. he wasn’t exactly making the best first impression; that warranted an apology, right? “i- want to join. but, if there isn’t any open room, i can go.” god, that hurt to say. however, it wasn’t his choice to make, was it? “but, if you don’t have room for me, would- you at least take care of clover. for me? please.” his voice trembled dangerously at the request. turning his teary gaze down to his dog, he knelt down gently to rub her head, right between her ears. he could barely take care of himself, let alone the both of them; at least clover would be safe.

hayley's gaze watched ellie, watched her begin to cry, watched her go into the lodge to sit down, and hayley's heart pulled her to go with her best friend. make sure she was alright, make sure she sat down, that she breathed, but she wasn't really sure she'd be of much use. all that feeling stuff, she wasn't great at it. she never had been, but she'd particularly begun sucking at it after her husband died. jackson was the one who knew how to feel, not her.

so, visibly unsure, she glanced back to harrison with wary eyes. not wary of him, but wary of whether or not she should scold him for making ellie cry, or abide by ellie's command of being kind. in the end, she opted for the in between, the awkward emotional arms length she held most people at these days.

❝you can stay, room isn't the issue.❞ food is. even then, he was in good shape, he could work his share. he could hunt, or work the green house, or help with firewood. her eyes shifted down to the dog and then back to the lodge, motioning to the building. ❝you can come inside, the both of you, warm up. just... just don't make her cry again.❞ she mumbled, giving an awkward rub to her arm as she turned around and headed back as well.

harrison hadn’t meant to make ellie cry. it wasn’t what he’d exactly imagined happening when he’d finally get to see his sister again. if anything, he would’ve expected happy tears on both of their parts, he’d expected the both of them to be happy to see each other. instead, there he stood, teary-eyed and watching ellie retreat into the cabin to try and feel better. all because her brother had come into the picture and made her feel sick.

it made him feel sick to his stomach.

gently rubbing between clover’s ears, he stood up after a moment to simply listen to the leader’s words. he felt relief finally wash over him as she said that he could stay, that room wasn’t the issue - he must’ve been missing out on a piece of that, but he’d figure out what she meant about it later, he was sure.

swallowing hard, he simply grew silent and nodded his head at her simple request. don’t make her cry again. he couldn’t make any promises, but he knew that he could at least try. he waited a moment or two as the leader went further into the territory, towards the lodge. then, after a few cautious steps, turned to look at clover. “c’mon,” he murmured to the dog, who was quick to catch up to her owner as they went and headed towards their new home.

brendan i. collins
tag: n/a. words: 506.
maybe Brendan is a bit too mean to newcomers, and maybe he comes off more as a brat than an actual threat trying to protect his home, but...look, he’s trying, okay? In all honesty, the teenager figures that anyone that comes to the border is an automatic danger to the lodge until proven otherwise; even then, after they’ve proven themselves innocent, it still takes what feels like centuries for Brendan to even warm up towards anyone in the slightest—if at all. This whole...tough persona/mask/whatever he throws on daily is more of a defensive thing than anything else, really. After all, if he establishes himself as a threat, who would want to hurt him? He can kick pretty high, and he’s getting good with his staff, too—no one should mess with him. In his mind, anyone who does is stupid. (Of course, he conveniently forgets the fact that every single fight he’s been in has resulted in him losing, but whatever.)

Anyways, as he continues glaring at the stranger, Brendan can’t help but tug on his frown a bit as he voice stumbles and shakes, almost like a confused and scared puppy. What’s this guy’s problem? Is he crying or something? Honestly, Brendan has been too focused on the fact that this guy is a stranger at the border to notice something like that; shifting his feet around a bit, however, he adamantly refuses to drop his stern appearance. Not even when Daniel comes over, lightly apprehending him for being so...he doesn’t know, aggressive? Glaring daggers at the fellow flintlocker, Brendan huffs, rolling his eyes—Daniel’s dumb, he knows that. Or just...annoying. Yeah, fricken annoying as heck.

Finally, though, at Hayley’s arrival, Brendan softens a bit, his stare landing on her as she orders him to stand down. Blinking once, then twice, the teenager hesitated a bit, dragging his hues back towards the stranger—Harrison. After a few more seconds of awkward hesitance, he then resorts to twirling his staff and sticking it by his side, the butt of it planted in the snow. Okay, there—happy? He can’t help but mentally grumble something along the lines of this guy better not be a threat or whatever, but he chooses not to say anything, not even as Ellie suddenly snaps and storms away.

dang, okay...?

Watching her leave, the fourteen-year-old blinks, feet shifting around a bit in the ground beneath him. That’s how he remains for the rest of the scene, just awkwardly allowing his presence to be seen but not heard or interacted with; when the group begins to move towards the lodge however, he quickly scurries to Hayley’s side, tucking his staff underneath his armpit. He...he isn’t so sure what to think, nor what to say, other than the fact that the food shortage comes to his mind. He’s been trying his best to supply as many eggs as possible to the lodge, but there’s only so much he can do, ya know? It’s not like he can force his poor hens to lay more eggs—that’s just cruel.
