and i say to myself, what a wonderful world
( tw for animal death )

The sound of barking permeated the salt scented, seaside atmosphere, mingling with the sound of calling seagulls. But unlike the serene whims of the birds, the noise the hound was making sounded angry and feral, and it prompted Sheogorath to investigate. His dark leather boots crunched hurriedly through the grit as he took long strides toward the scene, imagining what it might look like as he painted a scenario in front of his sharp amber eyes. Someone harming the animal perhaps? The dog fighting back? But when he arrived, what he saw instead, on that sunny morning, was Rae, standing off with what appeared to be a feral dog, with fierce, lethal dark eyes, predatory and vicious, tongue rolling, spittle flying past saliva covered jaws.

He really shouldn't care. Sheogorath and Rae didn't exactly get along. She didn't like him, or so he believed, but perhaps that was just his imagination. Then again, there were a lot of people that didn't like him, so it was a logical idea. Still, the lass was a Badlander, so he supposed it was a part of his responsibility to watch her back the way he had watched Catalyst's back, his own personal feelings set aside. And anyways, if he let the hound eat her, the Badlands leader would very likely not approve of his lack of action. Sigh. Well, he could be a hero again, he supposed. What was one more person that owed him their life? Maybe he'd hold it over her head like he planned to hold it over Catalyst's head. Heh.

Sheogorath yanked his pistol from the holster at his right side, aimed the barrel of the weapon toward the dog that was trying to attack Rae, and fired once. The bullet struck the concrete near the canine's paws, and it skidded to a halt, whirling toward him with a feral, wild expression.

"Ah, shit." The eccentric red head muttered to himself. The dog was coming towards him now, Was it rabid? Seemed like it. God, he didn't want to be bit. That would mean death. Hopefully, Rae hadn't gotten bit. Then again, the dog's mouth wasn't frothing or anything, so maybe it wasn't rabid at all. Maybe...it just hated people? Hmm. No matter, Sheogorath thought to himself as he pointed his gun at the animal again. This time, he had a clear shot as it advanced toward him, and when he fired, he struck it in the skull, and the hound stumbled, before collapsing to the ground.

He felt a wave of relief wash over him, seeing the feral animal die. His gaze immediately shifted from the corpse to Rae, however. How was she feeling? Probably shaken up and terrified, but honestly, how could he know? Sheogorath wasn't a mind reader, try as he might to be.

"You alright, lass?" Sheogorath inquired curiously. There wasn't much compassionate concern in his voice, but at least it was lacking in amusement. The fact that he had missed his first shot and could have been torn apart himself had made his mood a bit more serious. "That was one nasty lookin', big dog. Did it bite ya?" He questioned Rae, sliding his gun back into it's holster.

(please wait for Rae to post!)

RAE MCLEOD | FOURTEEN | BIO

[ i would like to formally apologise for rae being such a teenager ]

rae wasn't sure exactly what she was expecting from the animal. she hadn't approached it in an attempt to befriend it - even she was smarter than that - but the way that it so rapidly turned on her had taken her aback a little. it was a big dog - just her type, not the biggest she'd seen, but it certainly weighed more than she did - when the animal turned on her, snarling aggressively, all she could do was back away, unsure of how to proceed but in all her stubbornness not turning to run, as she probably should have done.

instead, the youngster took a few steps away from the snarling mutt, seemingly ready to fight it despite her obvious disadvantage, but before she had the chance to do so a shot was fired, and the attention of the dog was diverted from rae onto the source of the gunshot: sheogorath.

despite him having just removed a very obvious threat to her wellbeing - anybody with a brain could have seen that rae would have been no more than kibble if sheo hasn't fired his weapon at critical timing - the teenager inwardly groaned. she’d had had nothing less than a bad attitude when it came to sheogorath during the time in which she'd known him, and she had no doubt that he would take a decent amount of satisfaction out of having just 'saved her life', as he would no doubt put it. smug bastard.

the dog had now turned to the redhead, not getting far before being put down in a most violent way by the older man. despite the fact that it had no doubt intended to murder rae only a few seconds before, she couldn't help but visibly cringe when the animal whimpered and collapsed, dying almost immediately.

sheo now looked to rae - the absolute nerve of the man. did he expect her to thank him? to turn to him for comfort? cry, even? whilst she was no doubt shaken by the event, rae didn’t show it, instead folding her arms and huffing loudly, in a laughable attempt to look ‘cool’. in sheo’s defence he was now inquiring as to whether she was alright. the dog hadn’t bitten her, bit it had gotten a little too close for comfort and rae was still more frustrated at her complete and utter defenceless than anything else. she really ought to have been grateful but her stubbornness and pride prevailed, as was so often her downfall, and she looked sheogorath up and down, frowning.

rae waited a few seconds before she spoke, and what came out of her mouth was, "uh... good job, i guess. you know i had that under control though, right?" this was very clearly a fat lie and rae knew it, but she stood her ground, trying her very best to retain an appearance of casual indifference.

//tw for animal death

They weren't really an animal person. Having a furred, feathered or scaled companion had never appealed to them, even with the crippling loneliness they'd experienced throughout most of their life. Probably for the best; they weren't someone that was good at taking care of the needs of others, especially long-term. (Another reason why parenthood had never appealed to them.) They weren't the caregiver type (fortunately Gavril and Molly were), so they stayed away from anything that required it, like a pet. Mo was, of course, the exception, but Gav was the one that assumed the primary caregiving role. Good thing too. They'd probably just mess it up.

That wasn't to say that they were incapable of it, if Cat really put their mind to it they did okay. But that was in the short term, before they were inevitably distracted by something else. Such was the life of the leader, they supposed. If it wasn't one thing, it was another.

The sound of barking had been enough to get their attention; sure there were dogs around the Badlands, but normally someone hushed the canine after a minute or two. That dog kept barking, and then - bang - a gunshot. Now that got their attention. More barking, another bang. Silence. Well shit. After the first gunshot they'd started making their way towards the noise, unholstering their own gun just in case, though they put it back when they saw Sheo and Rae standing over a dog. "The fug was that about?" Under control, what, was it Rae's dog that Sheo just shot or something? Or had it been attacking her?

The words of Rae prompted a rather amused chuckle from the man. She wasn't grateful at all? Or perhaps she was just too prideful to admit it. Sheogorath wouldn't know. The two had barely talked, but he did think that Rae didn't like him very much. Oh well, that wasn't his problem, now was it? The red head offered a small twitch of his lips in the form of a smirk.

"Sure ya did, lass. It looked like you had it under control." He responded cheerily. Then, of course, Catalyst had to arrive. They always seemed to show up wherever he was. Sometimes, anyways. Maybe it was because the seaside town was relatively small, and it was easy to stumble upon one another, or perhaps Catalyst was just keeping an eye on him. No matter. He didn't particularly dislike Cat the way he used to. If he did, he wouldn't have saved the leader from that assassin. Sheogorath wondered if Catalyst had told anyone about that little event. Probably not, they wouldn't want to appear weak, after all. Very well then, Sheogorath would keep his own mouth shut. Lucky for Catalyst that Sheogorath wasn't actively plotting to dethrone them anymore, so he might as well not spill any secrets. Besides, perhaps he was getting on the leader's good side again. Perhaps he had proven he was not a traitor after all. Sheogorath wanted Catalyst to recognize that on their own. Maybe they would, eventually. Maybe they'd accept that they had overreacted and made a terrible mistake. Probably not. They had an ego, after all. Admitting they were wrong, even if they knew it deep inside, might cause them physical pain. Sheogorath supposed he could understand that feeling.

"A dog attacked Rae, so I shot it." The self proclaimed madgod responded to Catalyst's inquiry. It was a simple, neutral tone that flew past his lips, nothing more than stating a simple fact. "It looked like it was goin' to eat her. Of course, I couldn't allow that." Sheogorath mimicked a concerned tone of voice, but the amusement that mingled with his words was telling enough that he wasn't all that serious. "Really, though. Badlanders are supposed to watch each other's backs." That was true enough, he supposed. Shame Catalyst hadn't had his back when they stripped him of his rank and branded him for nothing more than a little lie. Sheogorath might have lost his dislike for Cat, most of it anyways, but he still thought the leader was a fool.

RAE MCLEOD | FOURTEEN | BIO

was sheogorath seriously laughing at her right now? rae was more than used to people older than herself refusing to take her seriously and apparently sheo was no exception. was he incorrect in his assumption that she had been in absolutely no way in control of the situation she’d found herself in? absolutely not, but somehow it still frustrated rae. her freckled face flushed in annoyance, she was about to respond with biting and no doubt childish aggression, but the sudden appearance of catalyst halted her before she could even get a word out.

amazing, she facetiously thought to herself, though the only outward sign of this was the quiet, almost inaudible groan that escaped her throat. though she wouldn’t exactly say that her loyalties lay a hundred per cent with the badlands, she was bit by bit beginning to view catalyst as an authority figure, somebody to be respected and somebody she quietly wished to prove herself to. needing to be saved from a stray dog couldn't look good.

still a little flushed, she shot sheogorath an admittedly unconvincing look of indignation and allowed him to explain the situation. she couldn’t exactly deny anything he’d said, and truth be told she was, very deep down, grateful for the help, though once again her stubbornness would never allow her to let him know. then again, she wasn’t a difficult person to read.

”i mean...” she began, slightly hesitantly, ”technically that’s what happened, but i had the whole situation under control, catalyst. coulda taken the bastard myself, really sheo was just being a noble shit.” rae was a bad liar who was really out-doing herself with the amount of utter bullshit she was spouting at that moment.

Pointing to Sheo's lie for the reason of his demotion and punishment was easy, but the situation had been far more complex than that. It wasn't lying to the leader that made him a traitor, it was turning his back on everything he'd done as a Badlander and what the rest of the group was still doing. Yeah, he might have reverted back to how he was before he had the fear of God in him, but what had happened during that time was what had happened. You couldn't convince Cat that they were wrong without countering every motivation and reason they had, and Sheo didn't seem to notice many of them to even try to rebut.

Cat glanced between Sheogorath and Rae, a vague look of skeptical consideration lingering on their face for a moment before smoothing over. They shrugged. "Right, well, better that he shot it before you got bit trying to fight it with your... bare hands?" They rolled their eyes. "We'll work on that." "We" didn't actually mean "you"; training the younger members of the Badlands was something they actually sort of liked doing, and it had been a while since they had done so. Most of the teens that were here before were gone, and Gabe had no interest in continuing his training. That was too bad.
