GENERATION WHY — joining
« on: June 14, 2019, 12:02:10 AM »
Sylph was uneasy. The boy riding her could sense it - the twitch of her ears, the way her step picked up just a touch as she discerned something that Phoenix's human senses had had yet to discover. It was the minute moments of uncertainty that Phoenix had learned to sense over the years - if Sylph was openly nervous, he probably already had something within eyeshot. Sylph was a reasonable horse - she didn't get nervous over little things that a younger, flightier horse would shy from. She'd always seemed so sure of her step, and perhaps that was why her and Phoenix got along. It was only the unknown, that wild, faceless void that truly scared Sylph (and by association, Phoenix), and these minor shifts in her demeanor (now, she was hesitantly walking past trees, as though she expected something to leap out at any moment) was leaving him tense.

Ever since Phoenix was small, he could remember Sylph. She'd been born four years after he had - some of his first memories involved her, the smell of warm hay, and the way her warm breath and tingly whiskers had felt against his face. Even now all it took to calm him was to merely touch Sylph's side, to ground himself against her and make sure she was there for him. His removal from his parents had been rough (Phoenix had been ready, they had not - he still remembered how upset they were, his mother's vibrating vocal chords against his ear, muttered syllables he couldn't understand), and unlike the past, it wasn't that easy to just call home to see how everyone was.

Entering the world alone was his chance. He was exhausted of being stuck at home, he was tired of being held tight, he was tired of being baby Phoenix. And well, here he was, out on the road. Out in the woods, wondering why Sylph was nervous. Pressing a hand tightly against her neck in a comforting way, Phoenix loosened the reins for Sylph to get some freedom. The woods were choking, they were choking for everyone. Sylph would do better as soon as they reached open territory (and so would Phoenix).

—-  & the girl understood what it was like to have such a close connection with than animal that a simple touch could bring you down from a panic. the way they feel your energy, happy or sad, and share your feelings so easily.. it fascinated her. she had only had her dog, ollie, for four years now but she wasn't sure what she'd do without him. he was small, but he had character and he was feisty. he gave off the impression that he believed he was bigger and stronger than he really was. when she was down, the little grey shih tzu was running to her side with leash in his little jaws, running in circles just waiting for a little walk with his favorite human. the small canine helped dylan in her time of need and was there for her when nobody else was, or when she was too afraid to go to someone. she talked and he listened ( which may come off crazy, but who doesn't talk to their dog? ). to put it simply, ollie was the definition of a girl's best friend; not even diamonds could compare when it came to what dylan loved more. her dog always won over her heart.

speaking of the good boy, he had raised his nose into the air to sniff. a new smell had hit his nose, alerting him to someone - or something - new. something stranger. dylan didn't have time to react before he had already ran out away from her in a fit of small yips and yaps in a random direction. she ran, trying to go after him, calling helplessly into the wind for him to get back to her. up ahead the blonde spotted a boy, who looked around her age, sat atop his steed. her running came to a speedy walk as she drew near and ollie kept barking at the large horse in front of them. out of breath, she bent forward with hands resting on her knees. she raised her index finger in the air, signaling for the stranger to give her a few seconds to regain her breath. at last, she was back again and she flashed that friendly, welcoming smile of hers.  ❝ well.. hey there, ❞ she breathed, leaning forward to pick up ollie.  ❝ what can i do for you?

— Ghost had been Silas' companion for years now, it seemed. Ever since he stumbled across the scruffy stray, a dog that seemed far too friendly and docile to be feral, Silas just had to welcome Ghost into his heart. He appeared so rough on the outside, a dog with a scarred face and a mean bark, but he could never even hurt a fly. Since then, Silas' 'pack' only continued to grow. Two chickens for eggs, two working dogs, another companion dog and three horses, perhaps it was clear to see that he preferred animals over people. After all, people could be so damn stupid sometimes. Don't get him wrong, animals were also very daft, but at least they were cute when they were being stupid.

Upon hearing Dylan's tiny gremlin dog (like dog, like owner!) yipping away at something, Silas' brows furrowed with curiosity and he stood up to follow Dylan, Silas strolling at a comfortable pace with Ghost hobbling behind faithfully. He slowed as he walked out into the clearing, stopping at the sight of a horse and a kid. Dylan seemed to already have things sorted, if allowing her demon dog to yap around the horses legs and hunching over to catch her breath was sorting shit out. Silas, for once, stayed quiet, merely observing as he watched over the conversation, arms crossed across his torso.

Slyph had thankfully noticed the dog before Phoenix had realized there was actually something rustling in the forest floor below him. The Quarter Horse had stopped suddenly, flaring her nostrils at the creature below her feet. It took a moment for the boy to realize what Sylph had so graciously stopped for - then he saw the dog, and almost jumped out of his socks in surprise. He didn't not like dogs, dogs were nice, his parents had had a few before he'd left, but what was a stranger dog doing around here, scaring the daylights outta him? Letting out a loud huff, Phoenix tried to shoo the dog away - but to no avail. The dog remained in its place. Phoenix was backing up Sylph slowly to prevent her from trampling the poor guy when the assumed owner appeared (thankfully, in Phoenix's eyeshot).

The girl seemed nice enough as she flashed a smile at Phoenix, but as soon as she opened her mouth, Phoenix got lost. Far-distance lip reading was worse than normal lipreading, and Phoenix quickly stopped trying after he figured she was saying hi. Shrugging, Phoenix dismounted from Sylph (while trying to avoid the dog at her feet), digging around in her traveling packs before he found what he was seeking. A pen, and a pad of paper. Chewing on the edge of his tongue as he wrote, Phoenix prayed he hadn't mistook the woman's smile. Glancing up as he finished, he blinked in surprise as a man appeared. Huh, there must be a civilization nearby. Offering the pen and pad of paper to the woman, Phoenix tapped the pen against what he'd written: I have no clue what you're saying.

—-  & she turned to glance at silas, her smile faltering some seeing the look on his face and sticking her tongue out at him. she was childish in the way she would insult him, she couldn’t help it. made life more fun. dylan then turned her attention back to the boy and the horse with what she hoped was another friendly smile. she didn’t want to scare him off, he seemed like he would be nice enough. she watched as he hopped off his steed and dug around for a pad and pen, her head tilting to the side as he wrote something down.

then her eyes read the words on the sheet and realization hit her.  ❝ oh! oh, okay, i get it! ❞ not once in her life had she come across a deaf person before, he was a first. she hesitantly reached for the pad, assuming that’s what he wanted her to do so he could understand her, and looked rather embarrassed. of course she couldn’t know he was deaf by looking at her, but she couldn’t help but feel guilty about it either. she takes hold of the pen and bites on her bottom lip as she wrote. finally she handed back the paper which said: this is bluestem prairie. i’m dylan. what’s your name and what can we do for you?

Phoenix (luckily) wasn't the only deaf person he knew. His father was deaf, so was his sister. His entire family signed, and with a hearing mother and sister, he'd been able to figure out an even mix of how the two worked. He tried hard to conceal a smile as Dylan kept talking, it wasn't a mean smile, more of bemused. At least she was responsive, some people didn't really love the pen and paper idea. Covering his mouth with his hand, Phoenix disguised the action as though he was rubbing his chin, giving him a second to remain polite to the stranger.

Bluestem Prairie. Well, Phoenix certainly hadn't ever read about it. Taking the pad back, he tapped her name gently before smiling at her, hoping that she understood his greeting. Scribbling his response, Phoenix flipped it back. I'm Phoenix Pascal. Do you have somewhere to rest horses? We've been traveling for a while. Hate to inconvenience if not. It'd be nice to get a rest, and if the group was fine with it.. even better!

—-  & sometimes she didn't think before she spoke, or rather, if she should speak or not. the girl would just spew words, whether they be beneficial to the conversation or not. this was fine example of the fact that her words did not benefit anyone in this conversation. she looked a bit embarrassed by it, too. she almost opened her mouth once more to utter out an apology but she held her tongue before a word left her mouth. she had to get used to this.

a hand flew up to scratch at the back of her neck, a nervous smile coming across her face as she read the pad again. she breathes in sharply, excitement starting to build up inside of her. he wanted to stay - though his duration was not explicitly stated, she hoped he wanted to make bluestem his new home. she nods her head quickly, any awkwardness she may have felt completely dissipating and her bright smile returning to her face. she claps her hands together before reaching for the pad.  of course, i can show you. it's not an inconvenience at all, we'd be happy to have you. she rocked back and forth on her heels when she handed it back to him.
