"speech" 'thought' text
tw mentions of alcohol, smoking, death, and violence

Turns out that rest and sleep were exactly what Miles needed to recover, too bad he hadn't caved sooner and rested his body before becoming so sick that he couldn't do anything but curl up in his bed and hide from the world. The worst of it was over now though, his head no longer ached, his eyes no longer stung, and his body was much less pained than previously. In all, he was doing substantially better.

The dark haired man sighed softly as he walked into the living area, a cloth in one hand, a spray bottle in the other. Time to tackle all that shit and gunk and germs. He'd have three new nieces and nephews running around very soon, and he wanted the place to be absolutely spotless. His eyes roamed the area, it didn't seem that anyone was around right now, one of the perks of waking up early.

The sun had probably just risen, though he didn't care to go outside and check. Cassie was still sleeping, snoring loudly under his cot in his room. She was tired out, he wasn't sure why, but the ability to sneak out of his bedroom without the rambunctious puppy following him was a bonus, much better than her following him everywhere and tripping him up.

He started towards a doorway, and sprayed the soapy solution on the door frame, and door knob, before rigorously wiping them down with the towel in his other hand. Yay for cleaning.

sleep wasn't something that came easily to the brunette anymore. she felt like a whale on two legs, and someone was constantly kicking her in the bladder. though she was more than eager to get them out of her and have control of her body back, the thought of trying to parent four children made her dizzy and ill.

however, she at least half expected most other people to be asleep, miles included. hands stuffed in the pockets of the sweatpants she wore, brows furrowed a little as she approached, each step was surprisingly quiet until she stopped, clearing her throat. he was rather intently cleaning the door frame, something that, while the brunette didn't disapprove of, she didn't entirely understand why he was doing it at this hour.

❝did you, uh, get hit with some germaphobia or something?❞ she inquired rather awkwardly, confusion written across her features as she observed her brohter.

Sleep? What was that? Damien's sleep schedule was whack'd, and had always been. Father dearest had frequently woken Damien up at the most ungodly hours to go hunting - spending the whole night out there, coming home and sleeping until late afternoon, when he'd inevitably be woken up to help his mother, or to go do the exact same thing that he'd done the night before...

All that was over now. However, his circadian rhythm hadn't quite gotten in with the system. Sometimes, he was awake all night - sometimes, he woke up as soon as dawn hit. Today was one of those days. He was dressed by now, the exact same trenchcoat he wore every day resting against his body.

As he saw Miles cleaning at the buttcrack of dawn, Damien resisted the urge to laugh. Or, lick some kind of surface and expose it to Damien germs just to spite the poor man. He didn't know why, but cleaning the doorframes just seemed so funny to him. "He's killin' the 99.99 percent of germs." Damien said, watching the man thoughtfully. "I hear bleach and ammonia's good for this kind of stuff." Or was it bleach and ammonia was not good for this stuff? Damien couldn't remember.

i don't need your advice.
i don't need your advice.
does anybody in this stupid electrical apocalypse have a normal sleep schedule? Like...seriously. What would’ve been considered abnormal back then is now normal, and the old normal is now abnormal. Basically, more people are prone to having traumatizing backstories and some form or another of insomnia or whatever. Brendan usually tries not to judge people on their backstories and whatnot (mostly because he doesn’t bother caring about them in the first place), but he, at the very least, tries to go to sleep at a decent time. Whether or not he actually goes to bed is a different story—it’s a hit or miss scenario for the most part—but the effort is there. He can’t speak for anybody else, but...yeah. That’s the case with him.

Now, apparently miles thinking that everyone else is asleep is a false statement. Truth be told, Brendan tends to wake up bright and early just to go and tend to the chickens; he doesn’t want to leave them waiting until later in the morning, that’s just rude. So, with his sneakers on and staff shoved under his armpit, he meanders his way down the halls of the lodge, aiming to get to the front door without passing by anybody else. A good plan, but it doesn’t execute well. Rolling his eyes, Brendan slows to a halt a little ways away from the group, the group that just so happens to be in his way and probably won’t plan on moving any time soon. Brilliant—just what he needs. Yeah, because he totally loves socializing with people.

Scowl growing on his features, Brendan stares at the door Miles works his butt off on, rolling his shoulders a bit before glaring at Damien. Wait—what? He’s heard of bleach at least, but...

"what’s...ammonia?" he mumbles, mostly to himself but loud enough for the others to heart.

(( trash post but oh well ))

Honestly, Miles had not expected anyone to be up as early as him, though he supposed it was inevitable that his half sister would be up, they did share DNA after all, and they both had trouble sleeping (from what he knew). That Damien kid was awake too, the only thing that really stuck out about that kid was his putting an egg of Brendan's in his mouth, god, that had been a very quickly escalated situation.

As Hayley spoke, Miles paused his cleaning, and looked up at her, about to reply before Damien cut off his impending speech. Damien's response was more thoughtful than Miles would have expected from the kid, though he supposed everyone was full of surprises. "Couldn't sleep, so I decided to do some cleaning." He explained to his half sister, looking briefly at Damien, and offering him a shrug of his shoulders and a, "Trouble is, the stuff looses it's potency the longer it's exposed to air... and it's also not good for the lungs of babies and young children."

He paused thoughtfully, "Or adults for that matter." He added as an afterthought. And here came Brendan, it was a little convention of people residing in Flintlock, an early morning rendevouz. Miles tilted his head to the side, and furrowed his eyebrows. How to explain ammonia to a kid who didn't know what it was. "It's a chemical cleaning solution that kills bacteria and germs... I think." He replied, albeit a bit uncertainly.

insomnia, cleaning; hayley didn't say it, didn't show it, but she thought it. they were far too similar, dealing with those exact problems in the same exact ways. she was a believer in nurture over nature, though, and when she looked at her brother's cleaning habits, she told herself there must be a reason behind it. she cleaned for her daughters sake; hope was going to begin walking sooner or later, and she didn't want her daughter grabbing door frames any time soon.

❝i'd, uh, recommend vodka.❞ she said quietly, eyes fixated on miles. ❝for the cleaning, i mean. it's pretty sterile, you've just gotta make sure you wipe it dry afterwards. otherwise, y'know, drunk babies and all that crap.❞ she joked, doing her best to not be as awkward as she perpetually felt around the man.
