//ok so this is just a quick little event to hold us over until we can get the bigger stuff rolling, which I will try and get a thread up for this weekend. Today's gonna be really busy for me so I won't be around much, BUT we got this at least
//also the point of the thread will be spooky stories, so there will end up being some tws at some point though at this moment I can't predict them

It was, apparently, according to that calendar vendor from Northstar, Friday the 13th. It was also a full moon, so Cat figured it might be a good night to set up a bonfire on the beach. Well, they'd gotten some different people to actually build the thing, and their parents had teamed up to make food for everyone. But hey. Idea person and supervisor, that counts for something.

Night had fallen, clear and cool with the moon shining brightly down on them. The crackling from the fire filled up the silence along with sizzling from a deer a hunting party had brought in earlier that day. Austin was watching it while it cooked, a beer in his hand and an open cooler next to him with more. Great. Whatever. "Alright, people, gather round. While dinner cooks up we're gonna tell some scary stories. Who wants to go first?" They'd thought about it and they'd decided they'd tell some stories about the Young Rogues. Murderous children were scary, right? At least the ones that were actually fucking real.

Twenty-one ⇥ Born 11/27/17 ⇥ Sagittarius ⇥ Real time aging
Boss (leader) of the Badlands ⇥ Ex prisoner of the Badlands
⇥ Ex cultist (Mourningstar) ⇥ Ex member of the Young Rogues

APPEARANCE   dress me up and watch me die
⇥ Catalyst is 6'2" tall; they possess a lean and muscular body, one that has a variety of old scars adorning it. One of the easiest to notice is one that stretches down their right cheek. While not a scar, one very notable marking on their chest is the "BL" brand. They have two piercings, one in their tongue and the other in the cartilage of their left ear. They typically dress in dark colors (favoring jackets with some sort of writing on the back), and their hair is black. They're not all dark, however, as they have pale blue eyes that peer out from beneath medium-sized eyebrows.

PERSONALITY   if it feels good, tastes good, it must be mine
⇥ Catalyst is ambitious, with the cunning and ruthlessness to reach their goals by any means necessary. They can be brutal when they feel it is needed, however when it's not they won't bother. They tend to be rather aloof and apathetic to most things and people, with some very rare exceptions. Provided those around them don't cross a few specific lines, they're content to leave them be, though they've been known to take an interest in some people, which seldom has a positive end for whoever their interest is in. They can be manipulative, and will often encourage people to make bad decisions. Those that stick by them will be rewarded, but those that do not will be cast out, as they've been outcast for their entire life and have learned to appreciate loyalty wherever they can find it. Even during the most stressful of situations, they usually keep a firm grip on their temper and keep their calm, though when they do snap and lose their temper, it is uncontrollable. They're remarkably observant, often able to deign much from subtle clues in what people say, how they say it and how they act.

tinny had never really been to a fun event like this. however, he had just been told about the bonfire by the NPCs, not the whole scary story bit. needless to say, he didn’t know about the negative connotations of friday the 13th, and he just figured that the mentions of scary stories was something that the badlands just did for fun. however, the scary stories wouldn’t be too fun for tinny.

taking his seat next to catalyst, tinny would stare up at them with wide eyes. “what? no o-one told me there was going to be s-scary stories, i thought we were just hav-ha.. having a bonfire.” tinny whispered to cat, seeming very, very concerned. “why are we telling scary stories? it’s n-nnnot halloween.

Lucerne was here for the food. God forbid he show his face, otherwise, to an event such as this - there were people there. And so, as awkward and gangling as always, Lucerne sat on a seat by the bonfire, leg crossed over his knee as he clasped his hands together on his lap. He'd do little more than sit around, waiting for Austin to finish cooking dinner already so that he could eat and then head to bed (he says that whilst spending most nights awake and active.)

Cat mentioned... scary stories, and requested for people to tell the others some of their stories. Icy gaze shifted across the group before rolling his eyes and releasing a gentle sigh - oh, was this absolutely hateful. He hesitated momentarily, deadpan in contemplation, before eyes landed on Tinny whispering to Cat. He was evidently worried, and so Lucerne, cool and collected as ever, mumbled monotonously,  ❝ No need to worry, Timmy - ❞ Timmy? That was the name, right? (wrong). ❝ You're already living in the scariest story of all and yet you're taking it like a champion. Look at the sorry state of these people, reducing themselves to sitting around a fire for story time... ❞ He sighed, tipping his head to look up at the sky. ❝ God, help us all. ❞

AND CHANCES ARE, THEY WON'T GO FAR | | |
tw: Mentions of death, ghosts, losing bodyparts, cursing, all of that was Salem messing around dw, mentions of fires/burning down buildings

Bonfires were fun; couldn't have a bonfire on a ship, so his crew would have to torch other things when they hit land. Houses were a common thing to go up in flames, sometimes other boats too, it was all a great bit of fun.

"Oh lighten up, it's just a bit of fun." Salem commented, glancing towards Lucerne as he also sat by the fire, enjoying the warmth and view of the sparks dancing across the sky. He hadn't heard or noticed Tinny whispering to Cat, so he acknowledged the child with an encouraging nod.

"You guys know about those stories of ghost ships, hmm? I've got a few to tell of those. Be glad you're not spending tonight out on the water; the amount of dead sailors floating about is astronomical, nowadays." Salem hummed happily. "How about I start us off, since you guys need some encouragement."

He stood up and stretched his arms in front of him, locking his legs to stretch them as well before finally falling limber again. He started pacing in front of the fire, knowing it'd give him a spookier look.

"When you die at sea, they dump your body in the water. Live by the waves, die by the waves; it's an honor to be let loose far from the shore. The further from the shore, the less likely your remains are to wash ashore." Salem started, smiling down at them in what he hoped was an appropriately creepy manner. "But the real honor? If you were a good sailor, a proper sailor, you wouldn't die. The water would claim your body, but it wouldn't claim your soul. And then it's said you're picked up by a ship; it looks normal at first, but by the time you board you've already been claimed by it's captain.

Some captains are good; they want to wander and sail peacefully for eternity. But some captains are bad, and want to claim everything they couldn't in life. That's when things turn... Bad. I've only ever encountered a bad ghostship once, but by the time the dawning sun cut through their ship and sent it into slumber once more they'd already claimed one of my crewmate's hand."
Salem chuckled to allow the story a bit of time to settle before continuing. "Kept blabbering they'd come back for the rest of him, that I'd pay tenfold for not allowing them to claim his soul that night. None of that really matters though, they never returned; at least, not yet. Hope none of you idiots get caught in the crossfire when that day comes."

And with a yawn, Salem sat down on his seat again. "That was fun, who's next?" Wasn't his best story, but it was a good round of talking complete bullshit for a few minutes, so who's to say he dropped the ball?

tinny shot a hesitant glare at lucerne, casting his greenish gaze to his worn shoes. soon enough, salem started his own story, and tinny was fully prepared to cover his ears, but.. it never got bad. not even for him, probably one of the biggest wimps in the badlands. he tilted his head, frowning ever so slightly. "th-that was hardly ss-sc-scary, sir." he said, voice soft. slowly, there was a little twitch of a smile at one of the corners of his lips. "i could d-do better than.. than that!"

addy had contemplated turning around and leaving the place once lucerne had showed up on scene. things were still - incredibly awkward between them ever since they called it quits on their friendship. however, if there was anything in this world that addy wasn’t-- addy wasn’t a bitch. and only bitches would turn around with their tail tucked between their legs like some damn coward. instead he had sat on a different side, to where he didn’t have to look at the man or be too close to him - but rather simply stare into the fire and occasionally glance out into the ocean.

“god, help us all.”

the redhead really fucking tried not to glance over to cat at the comment. still, even he couldn’t help the side-eyed glance their direction. if only lucerne knew. bet they had some rather interesting stories from those days… right? he half-listened to salem’s story, which it wasn’t scary, but it was hard to be scared by much nowadays. still, he couldn’t help but decide to throw catalyst on the hot seat - was that the saying? he fucking sucked at those phrases - by asking, “why don’t you share one? you’re the one who suggested it.”

//tw for violence, particularly involving children (mostly kids perpetrating it but also being victims)

"That's what you get for thinking, ey kid?" Cat did their best to anticipate every possibility for how any given day would go, but when things they didn't predict happen, they didn't let it trip them up. Fate threw curve balls sometimes, and if they weren't ready they were gonna get hit right in the fucking face. "It doesn't have to be Halloween to tell spooky stories. It can just be because I said so."

They shot a glance at Lucerne as he joined them, the faintest trace of a smirk on their face. Was it because he was there, at an event with people, or because they agreed with what he told Tinny? Who knew. Their attention shifted to Salem as he launched into his story, going on about dead bodies in the ocean and ghost ships. "Wouldn't sharks eat the bodies? I hardly think there are actually all that many bodies floating around." Because that was the unbelievable part of his story.

And there was Addy, prompting them to tell a story. Alright then, challenge accepted. "Alright. This one's actually true - it's about some people I met more than ten years ago." They'd debated talking about the Young Rogues while they'd been overseeing preparation for the event, letting people in on some piece of their past, and in the end... It had been a decade since they left, and they just... didn't have any bearing on Cat anymore.

"I'd just run away from home - dumbass kid shit - a couple weeks before, and I was about nine. So, naive and stupid and hungry and scared, right? Well then I met this girl. She was fifteen, and she told me about this group of kids, roaming through the world, no adults allowed. She said they'd all look out for me if I joined them, and sure enough, a bunch of kids and teenagers, traveling through the world, all the rules they had were ones that seemed to make sense." Tammy had pitched them a paradise, but they'd come to find out that was just part of the requirement tactics. Make it seem like the best thing in the world, or the only option for survival. And those kids, they got good at figuring out what to do.

They must have been an easy mark. Alone, cold, hungry, terrified. She offered safety and security for the price of loyalty, something that they'd been all too happy to give. If anything, she probably put more effort into selling the Young Rogues, it would have just taken a few words about how they could go with her and they would have.

"But she didn't tell me everything. She didn't tell me that what we couldn't take, we destroyed. She didn't tell me that anyone that got in our way would be killed, or that I would be expected to kill by the time I was ten. I didn't - I held off on getting my hands bloody until I was Tinny's age. But I watched those kids murder and die for two years like that's just what they were supposed to do."

They paused, memories of the Young Rogues suddenly hitting them a bit harder than before. Were they going to stop, though? No, keeping themself composed and continuing on was half their job in Mourningstar. "I once watched Tammy - the girl that recruited me - tell a kid that was like... seven? I watched her tell him he had three choices, get out of her way, kill his parents himself, or die with them." And it was shortly after that they'd left.
