SKIPPING STONES - OPEN
« on: January 10, 2020, 12:48:31 PM »

plunk!

the rock plunged into the water, leaving the redhead staring with a small scowl. he stood, barefoot as the waves lapped at his feet, unimpressed. he thought after that one time lucerne tried to teach him he would’ve learned how to skip a goddamn rock. however, all of his attempts had been hit or miss (mostly miss, although he wouldn’t admit it). it wasn’t like he was going to drag lucerne out to teach him, especially when he was.. kind of pissed off with everyone and everything at the moment. perhaps that wasn’t new for addy, but this was a different type of anger. anger that left him almost feeling disappointed in everyone involved.

he tried to skip a rock. it plunked into the water. fuck lucerne for wanting to leave badlands and come here. he threw another rock. it plunked into the water. fuck cat and green for the fiasco that happened there. he picked up a rock and flicked his wrist. fuck him for thinking he could leave the badlands and fit in anywhere else. the rock skipped across the water a few times. what? four, five times? he watched as it disappeared beneath the water’s surface before turning his gaze around, as if expecting some applause for the action.

he sighed before picking up a rock, and repeating the process.

It had been quite some time since Tara had felt out of place. Like she did not belong. But, those feelings were since left in the past; after all, Northstar was her home now. There was no more believing that the greatest she'd be was second-best in somebody's life. Perhaps that was the curse of a unbreakable family bond - nothing could tear Thomas away from his number one priority which was the family he was born into. No matter how much he'd insist otherwise, or try and beg Tara to see that she and Finn were his priority, the only question Tara had to ask him was:

Who did he choose live with, then?

Maybe Flintlock Lodge was a better home for him anyway. Tara was perfectly content with her family unit here in Northstar. Mickey was a breath of fresh air, a kindness in her life, and he provided her with the company she truly believed she needed. She didn't need a husband to pick and choose when it was convenient to love her. As much as she loved and cared about Thomas, the marital connection that they once shared was nothing more than the past now. And, honestly, leaving that family behind was the best thing she could've done for her and her son. Northstar was home to her.

Finn springing forwards in a wobbling trot across the sand, Tara watched as the toddler made his way over towards a very recognizable redhead. The man who played tag with him that one time (not really, but Finn thought he was a part of the big game). ❝ Uh- Why'd you frowing them?! ❞ Finn explained messily before hopping and landing with a splash in the water as the waves lapped up the sand. Tara wandered over, hugging her torso gently as she stopped nearby. ❝ He's skimming stones, Finn. ❞ She explained, pausing before turning her head to glance over towards Addy. ❝ You look like you've seen better days. ❞ She was blunt as she pointed out, observing him carefully. And, she felt that it wasn't because the stones he was throwing were mostly landing without dancing across the surface first. Something was bothering him; that, or his resting face was truly one of permanent vexation.

his eyes wandered towards the newcomer, watching as the toddler messily garbled some words his way. then, before waiting for an answer, the kid then splashed about in the water. “water’s cold,” he bluntly stated to the kid, as if trying to warn little finn before it was too late. the water wasn’t even that cold, but he- didn’t know. he was trying, here. while his experience with kids were very few and far between, he at least resembled some form of a soft spot for the little ones. especially when their parents weren’t completely unbearable.

and in this case, tara wasn’t that bad. if anything she was one of the only people that made this fucking place bearable. the blonde was his type of person; she looked kind and sweet, but there was more to her than what met the eyes. that didn’t mean he was going to unload all of his bullshit onto her. he shrugged the slightest bit as she pointed out that he looked like he’d seen better days. hell, he definitely had- but he wasn’t going to talk about it. instead he picked up a rock and shrugged, pursing his lips momentarily. “must be the new workout regimen.”

his attempt at sarcasm was followed by throwing the rock out across the water, skipping once before plunging into the water. “how long have you been here?” a small question, the smallest insight into whatever must be on his mind. the redhead waited a moment, then, before he slowly crouched down next to finn. “here, you want to try and throw a rock, finn?” and with rather gentle hands for the redhead, he guided the kid’s hands with the rock - and, while it didn’t make the best skip, it made a small splash. with that he turned his head back over towards tara, shrugging. “we tried.”

As Addy pointed out that the water was cold, Finn kicked his bare feet around in the water, the bottom of his slightly rolled out trousers getting wet in the sea. ❝ Look! ❞ He announced, staring at Addy with a straight face, determined eyes gleaming before he splashed about more. As if he were wordlessly rebelling against Addy's words. Tara slowed to a stop beside Addy, chin tipping up ever-so-slightly as she glided her hands into her jean pockets. ❝ I tried rolling his pants up - nice to see that didn't work so well. Little shit. ❞ She mumbled fondly before chuckling to herself.

It felt nice getting to speak so openly around somebody. Tara tended to hold her tongue, simply observe rather than express her own thoughts because, honestly, if people wanted her opinion then they'd ask her for her opinion. Otherwise, she kept her mouth shut, not because she felt like she had to, but because she felt like it'd be a waste of breath on her part. But, when it came to Addy, she was beginning to feel more free to pass quips and comments because, like her, Addy too enjoyed to pass comments every so often. She quirked a brow as she gazed off at the horizon, listening to Addy's sarcastic comment before quickly quipping in return, ❝ That must be it; I don't think the washboard abs are a good look on you, I'm afraid. ❞

She watched as he threw a stone, which quickly submerged beneath the gentle waves. ❝ In Northstar? Nearly two years now. On this beach? Around five minutes. ❞ She commented, turning her head to look towards him before she began to fight off a small smile. Next, Finn was the center of attention, the toddler tipping his head up to look at Addy before Addy helped him throw a stone. It barely skipped before landing in the water, earning a proud round of applause from Finn. ❝ Yay- ❞ He cheered, Tara unable to help herself from chuckling quietly before looking towards the two boys. ❝ Good job, you two. ❞

Finn picked up another stone before holding it out for Addy again expectantly. ❝ Lets again. ❞

the tyke had the nerve to splash about in the water some more as if to prove to addy that he had been wrong. he stared at the kid’s determined gaze, obviously unimpressed. he moved his foot to send the smallest of splashes at finn’s ankles, lip twitching up the slightest bit. goddamn kids. they really didn’t give a shit about anything, did they? “little shit,” tara said fondly. he looked over at her and huffed a short breath. “yeah? he must get that from you.” the remark meant nothing to him; he didn’t expect her to take it too seriously.

it didn’t seem like anyone took addy too seriously. god, back in the badlands every serious remark he made was usually thrown to the side. it was hard to take someone serious when that person constantly gave harsh remarks he generally didn’t mean. that was where he wouldn’t fuck up with this new start in northstar, at least that was what he told himself. he had to try and be fuckin’ genuine, at least occasionally. that was easier said than done for the redhead, though. for starters, holding his tongue and watching his language around kids-- was a start. “i don’t think so. you’ve never seen me with washboard abs,” he pointed out. he paused before adding, “i haven’t seen myself with them, either, so-” and in his voice, a hint of amusement. he really thought he was something, didn’t he?

apparently finn was better at skipping stones than addy was, and the redhead didn’t know how to feel about getting put in his place by a toddler. he chose not to say anything as he looked at finn holding up another stone, wanting to throw it again. “where’d you come from before northstar?” he asked then as he went to help finn skip the stone. she’d been here when the badlands took over northstar… wasn’t it odd to think they once were on two different sides at that time? that they could’ve ran into each other, seen each other, back when they were enemies? shaking his head, he helped finn throw the rock. it skipped once before going into the water. addy blinked. “this kid is better at throwing these fucking-” he paused then before he continued on, “these things than i am.”

As Finn so smugly splashed about in the water, he squealed playfully as a gentle splash of water was sent his way by Addy. Finn roared with laughter, hands up in the air and baring his fingers like claws as he pounced at Addy. Finn- ❞ Tara gasped quietly before beginning to cackle to herself, Finn scrunching his face up as he tried to tickle Addy's knee. Emphasis on the word ❛tried❜. Instead, it was more like him poking at the side of Addy's knee, finding the whole stupid game that he was playing hilarious. Tara quirked a brow at Addy's remark before swiftly quipping back, ❝ How'd you guess? ❞

Addy was funny, Tara wasn't afraid to admit that as a fact as she listened to him with an amused grin sitting on her lips. There was an authenticity to him that she wouldn't see with others very often. He was harsh and incredibly blunt, but Tara liked it. She could handle the candidness of his words pretty effortlessly. After all, once married to Thomas Stirling-Moray, Tara could handle anything. She raised her brows, nodding her head lightly, ❝ Well maybe you need a new workout regime then. ❞ She retorted, turning her head to look at him before a wry smile found its way to her lips.

At Addy's question, Tara pursed her lips before glancing down at Finn. Never one to tell the complete truth about her past, Tara cleared her throat as she watched Addy helping Finn. ❝ All over, really. We used to travel a lot and, when his father left - ❞ She nodded over to Finn, ❝ I thought we ought to settle down somewhere. So, here we are. ❞ She nodded slowly, as if almost believing the lie that she spoke of so effortlessly. ❝ What about yourself? How long were you in the Badlands for? ❞ She quirked a brow curiously before looking back down as Finn throw the stone. He looked up at Addy when he began to talk, before parrot talking eagerly, ❝ Thucking rock! ❞

the kid really was a little shit. huffing a short breath, he watched as tara gasped in surprise at finn’s reaction- his rebellion to whatever authority addy seemingly had. fingers gently poked at the side of his knee, causing addy to huff shortly at the action. “you think you’re funny, huh?” he observed, setting for sending another short splash finn’s way. “you don’t see it?” he remarked to tara’s quip, turning his gaze back over towards the blonde. he didn’t know tara the best out of everyone in northstar, however he liked to think he saw that rebellious part of her. god, she was probably worse than goddamn finn was in some ways.

a new workout regime? he shook his head in distaste at the idea. guess he’d never see himself with a full set of abs. eyes wandered over towards tara as she talked about her life before northstar. he figured the question would be turned around on him, though he still found himself thinking about how to answer. the redhead cleared his throat and then shrugged. “not too long. little less than a year.” an answer far more vague and less put-together as tara’s own. he breathed a short sigh as the rock skipped, and as finn--
“thucking rock!”
his gaze widened briefly, glancing over towards tara before looking back at the ocean water. “i- didn’t teach him that.” though he still couldn’t help the way his lip twitched, huffing a short breath of almost shocked laughter.

after pausing momentarily, he let the silence settle between the two. then, he ended up saying, “so. cat might have made this comment to green that i could be a spy for the badlands.” shrugging, he then added, “i’m tempted to almost convince him that i am one.” a brief idea of fun for the redhead-- that wouldn’t seem to be fun for anyone else. however, it seemed like he would have to recruit at least someone to help him - and lucerne wouldn’t be the best option, either.
