What would you like to see in The Badlands?
« on: September 08, 2020, 08:59:40 AM »
Hey everyone! Now that Scully, Finny and I have taken The Badlands on, there are a lot of things that we would like to achieve whilst leading the group! Unfortunately, we feel as if activity dwindled somewhat as the ideas slowly grew more stale over the months (and, I promise, this is not anyone's fault!), so we would love to refurbish the group in order to revitalise it. But, we would like to do so with the help of everyone on Bearbones. These are our ideas on what we would love to do for BL; what are your thoughts? Have you got anything that you would like to see in BL?

Spoiler:  sorry, there are a lot of points! • show
• Update that territory. Include references in the guide and make a Pinterest board to visualize the territory and the theme better. Perhaps, if people were interested, changing the territory so it is no longer on the coast? Sort of like Nevada desert vibes?

• Bring back the presence of a highly sophisticated criminal network within the group so that there’s a more solid theme, but don’t thrust this theme upon everyone; allow for there to be a variety of people in BL who provide for the group, and perhaps those who prove their loyalty gets an initiation (and remove branding) which confirms that they are loyalists to BL’s cause.

• Develop it into a bad group - must have a reason for being bad. They need to have an ambition to explain why they do the things they do, why they are a powerful force and most importantly why people would want to join in and reap the benefits of a criminal group. We were thinking that they become a bad group because of their crooked ways of becoming successful. No one is safe from Badlanders and they have that bad reputation. They swindle and steal, intimidate but also fool others for their own benefit. They do this not just for the hell of it, but because it grants them one of the most luxurious lives in TNW game.

• No neutral groups. Allies purely serve a purpose to them; everyone else is fair game.

• Change the ranks up and create a clear delegation of powers.

• Encourage a general mobocracy within the group where there is a collective decision making system to enforce strict rules (the codes of honor).

• Encourage a lawlessness where members have freedom to do what they want as long as they pay their dues and prove they exert this freedom with a good level of discipline.

• Change the use of bandannas and piercings to dog tags. It’s easier to make dog tags than it is to find bandannas. Perhaps when someone joins the BL, they are given a dog tag necklace and they're given additional tags with their promotions? The more tags you've got, the more established and well-respected you are within the group?

• Establish a meritocratic system where merit gains respect, trust and promotions into the group. You get on the Knope's good side, then you will be their best friend. You piss them off? Watch out.

• Ensure there are consequences for leaving the group - a punishment of some sort. Once you join you will inevitably get caught up in the midst of the business with no means of safe escape. It exhibits a Mafia sort of vibe that once you join the BL you can never escape the life. Example of a punishment is that a member must pay back everything they had earned back to The Administration, else there will be a bounty for anyone who escapes without paying back what they owe BL. Essentially, the longer you pledge allegiance to BL, the harder it is to get out. Once the Knopes initiate you, you are sucked into that life and you will not be able to just leave without repercussions.

• Home in on the fact that they will offer a range of illegal goods and services, perhaps covered up with a legitimate business plan such as opening up beach side casino and speakeasy where the house always wins. Get in on manufacturing and distributing their own alcohol, cigarettes, weapons and drugs - could use their legit business to advertise their goods and create business and trade links for their more illicit goods. Additionally, distributing these goods has customers place a reliance on them, meaning that BL has a tight grip on people which gives them more power.

• Also contract killings, kidnappings, blackmail, theft, extortion, fraud. Even things like stealing livestock to trade on to other groups.

• They may also try to monopolize trade industries by sabotaging other groups so that more people must rely on them to survive.

• Next, a big event to celebrate the new trio of leaders, this can be a way to lure in new members, with an emphasis on their lawlessness, gambling, alcohol, and drugs.

• Have a list of bounties they have out on those who have wronged the group and/or left them without going through the steps they've set to leave. This also will add to their bad nature, making it nearly impossible to leave without having to entirely escape, but even then, there will be a bounty put out on them. Those who offer their services as a BL bounty hunter will be more highly regarded in the group.

• The antagonizing of other groups, encouraging more interaction between them. Whether this be stealing, raids, threats, trespassing, etc. simply causing problems for the other more peaceful groups. Also quick flips on supposed allies, constantly keeping groups on their toes.

• A casino that is heavily rigged and gets the patrons hooked and almost stuck there. The only way to win is to be a part of the badlands and accessing other things, possibly a fight club of sorts, which could also be a punishment for wanting to leave, having to participate. There are frequent Gatsby-level parties with a resident jazz band, dancers, singers and other performers. BL is so generous and giving during parties, people don't realize they're taking a lot more than they're giving - after all, when they're offering freebies like drugs, alcohol and other luxurious goods, they're trying to get people hooked on it so that they'd return.

• Mardi Gras celebrations - Week long celebration. Normally, the dates of the holiday shift each year, but for simplicity sake and to distance it from the religious ties, we set a week. Feb 27th - March 3rd. The first night could be masquerade theme and is when everyone who isn’t in BL typically arrives and it allows for some anonymity for those coming, hiding from where they are coming from and from BL until BL proves itself to be no judgement, essentially all things go. The first night starts out as a fancy, ball type of event, but eventually descends into chaos. Next day is kinda “family friendly” (using that v lightly but it could be their advertisement tbh) with it being almost like a block party with live music on the streets, bright colors and outfits, activities, it becomes more wild as the sun goes down and alcohol really starts to mount. Day three and four we’d have to figure out but day five, i was thinking would have an emphasis on the casino. they have discounted buy ins or something, maybe free booze, idk, but just something to entice people to come and gamble so that their rigged games REALLY pull in money that day. And it’s at the end for the trust and fun that the whole week built up to, breaking down the guards of people who come.

• BL starts to raid and steal things and whatnot, but what if they manage to steal valuable metals which they smelt down into a new currency that they start by using in the casino but hopefully eventually with their power and influence they begin filtering it into surrounding groups as well

• Set up a tattoo and piercing parlour for all those in TNW to get body modifications.

So. Are there any ideas that you like/don't like? What other ideas do you have in order to revitalise the group?

first off, all these ideas sound pretty great!

being able to visualize the groups territory would be pretty great! sometimes i have issues with getting it all straight in my head.

tied into that, some of the territory of the badlands isn't often used, so either incorporating the rest of the territory, i.e. having the group use the docks for shipping and distribution. otherwise i feel like moving the group to the desert might be pretty fun, and also different. since the group isn't really doing much with the beach theme as it is.
making it a beachside retreat sounds pretty cool though.

i also love the idea of dog tags! perhaps when they get more recognition something like a new engraving into their dog tag, front back, extra tag for more symbols representing things? just a thought.

may post more but i need to go eat food.

we liked the desert idea also to make a little bit more diversity in territory since nd is coastal as well and give bl more of a vegas-eque feel, emphasizing the casino part.

& wisteria, i love the idea of extra things going onto dog tags to signify milestones and or ranks!

as well, i'd love to know if anyone would have any cool ideas for themes of the mardi gras week. it doesn't have to necessarily be traditionally mardi gras ofc, but anything cool ideas do differentiate the days would be really fun i think.

the three of us have also discussed trying out ooc responsibilities along with hps, nothing too demanding, just to try it out.

okay i am dead tired so i don’t think any of this will make sense. but i hate making y’all wait for replies/input so i’m gonna try my best to summarize everything

the run-down of it is, that i absolutely love all of the ideas. i mean i’m obsessed ! it’s just exciting to think about bl actually being back to being this really cool group. idk.

but as to my favorite things. i think my most favorite out of all of them is updating the territory ? ? i struggled so much with the badlands because it seemed like all there was to do was do something at the casino, or do something at the beach. so the idea of having a lot more areas to cover, and a lot more to do, is really everything ! personally i would prefer if they moved ? ? ? i like the idea of a nevada desert, las vegas style group especially since i think people showed interest in a group like that way back when bb was like ‘lets make a new frontboard group’ but the idea was dropped because of inactivity ?

these are just some random ideas about the territory that i had - i’m hella insecure about them so if you don’t like them,,, let me down easy asdf - but if it was still on the water i’d love a boardwalk that’s super touristy ? like in jersey shore kinda thing ! or, if it’s not on the beach, maybe something taking inspiration from the las vegas strip and having a really notable place like that in their new territory ? which seems fitting since badlands will want to be like. party city and super enticing to people coming in.

and i’d love for there to be a more criminal network that not everyone has to join. or at least, if that doesn’t happen, for the love of all thinGS HOLY could we change the board title to at least say it’s not a rough and tumble mafia group if it’s not this has irked me foR CENTURIES Y'ALL ASDFASDF

i kinda love the idea of them being a bad group but like. when around other groups it’s almost subtly that way. just for them to turn their backs to the other group and be like “hey, , y o , , ,  so this one group ? let’s fight them and loot them and make them suffer” after they were just like. partying and smoking together and having a good time . all like it’s nothing to them asdf

also agree to getting rid of bandannas and piercings, and getting rid of branding as well.

also loving the idea of them being really harsh and everything because i feel like it could possibly even reignite some old tense feelings between northstar and bl ? ? ? idk

also love the idea of contract killings, kidnappings, blackmail, bounties, etc. it makes me think of it being the equivalent to bl “chores” when in reality it’s just. dark stuff nobody should want to get mixed up in

ummm i’m too tired right now to really think of anything else. maybe i’’ll add something tomorrow. but basically i just love everything and yeah !

sorry that this sucked sm : ' (

Ultimately it's a beautiful thing, Like flowers blooming in a lonely field; The petals drift through crossing winds, They find their way to river streams That scent the water beautifully. it takes me back to you, It takes me back to you.

I’m mobile atm so I can’t write out a ton! I agree with p much of these ideas and I think they would really give the badlands a push in the right direction

Yeah when I initially made the coastal territory I intended for the docks and the harbor to be put to use more but TNW kind of fell off before any of those aspects could be implemented.

Seeing the coastal territory go would be bittersweet for me but I see where y’all are going with the Las Vegas theme! I feel like you guys really need to play with the territory and the landscape because I think one of the issues with the original desert territory was that it became dull and boring really quickly tbh?
please don't let me down

that was our exact idea for moving it to the desert, hoot!

after discussing things, i believe we want to keep the coastal town part, but have them begin expanding and taking more and more land to show their greed and ambition. as well, we liked the idea of the port, like you had intended beatles, and then inny's idea of the boardwalk really sold us. so, for now, they will be staying in the coastal area, but we will be updating the description and the desert and possible other places will come along with group plots/those type of ideas.

as well, as inny brought up, we will be renovating the banners and everything like that. we wanna give it a whole new feel.

lastly, something else important to us is the fact that although we want them to really be bad, we want to encourage strong ic loyalties and bonds. it's a tough place to be, but members genuinely like it.
