THE BADLANDS.
"a hero fights for a good that no longer exists in this world. a hero is tasked with saving lives that don't want to be saved. a villain, thoughβ€” that's what you would call a person who has given up on trying to be nice. a villain thinks of himself and uses others to survive. a villain is what you would call normality."
INTRODUCTION
In this crumbling world, there are the wolves and there are the sheep. The sheep are weak. They struggle and eventually let their lives slip away, the darkness of the night washing them away as if they were never here. The wolves, however, make their own way. They band together and hunt the sheep as a pack, using their combined strength to survive. This is the way of The Badlands, an organized group made up of the roughest and most dangerous individuals in the land. Under a strict hierarchy and strong leadership, we endure the harshest of times and ensure that we come out on top, glorious and respected by all. The Badlands doesn't stand for being pushed around. We're a team. We will conquer, and we will win.

TERRITORY x x x x x x x
The Badlands is situated in an abandoned beachside town abundant with oak trees, overgrown greenery, and even a few palm trees. The weather is mild most of the time and the humidity in the area is almost always present, meaning that the chances of fog and water vapor in the air are high. Other than the occasional marine layer, the town is sunny and the temperatures are tolerable.

Bordering the city are hills and mountains, and while they seem tall and grueling to climb, there is a pass that cuts through them that makes travel easier on visitors and messengers. The base of these hills is considered the border. The territory is open, with the absence of armed guards or gates, although there are daily patrols. Also at the base of the mountains is a small woodland in which critters roam through the bushes and clearings.

The streets are old and the once-vibrant structures are fading and chipping away. Most of the designs of the buildings in town are old-fashioned, giving the overall look an "old-timey" feel. There are plenty of abandoned businesses and shops that people can live in and even take over for themselves. As you travel more inland, however, the houses become more modernized. There are different rows of neighborhoods with one and two-story houses that can accommodate plenty of people.

The oceanside casino is considered to be a headquarters of sorts. Meetings and initiations are held in the conference rooms, as well as planning and such. The hotel, built on top of the casino, holds several stories of suites that come with the basics: beds, closets, bathrooms. If you want to pass time by playing billiards or card games, there is a large casino on the lobby floor of the hotel.

Another addition to the territory is the ocean. This provides a source of fresh food such as fish, crab, lobster, and other sea creatures that you can eat. There is a stretch of beach that travels all along the coast and also a harbor where a few boats are docked. The boats can be used for trading/shipping purposes if needed. There are also plenty of places to explore, such as cliffs overlooking the sea and even caves. Other animals nest in these areas, such as seagulls, squirrels, and even the occasional fox.

Essentially, the Badlands lives in a city sandwiched by the ocean and the mountains.

LAWS
— Just a friendly reminder to put trigger/content warnings in your posts if it details murder/drugs/any content like that. Although the Badlands is a bad group, we'd still like to make everyone else feel comfortable OOCly!
— Show respect to the high positions, especially the Boss.
— Notify the Underboss and the Boss of trespassers and visitors from foreign groups immediately. If they cause trouble, bring them directly to the Boss.
— Report to the Boss if there is any suspicious activity within the group/the territory.
— Betraying the Badlands is a cause for exile. You will be marked down as an enemy if you jeopardize the group. If you return after your exile, then you are game for being attacked on sight.
— Violence in the city is inevitable, but do try to be professional when attending meetings and other business-like confrontations.
— Injuring/disarming another Badlander is allowed if there is a good reason for it or if a threat is posed.
— Do not share the group's secrets with any outsider unless permitted by the Boss.
— Raids and ally visits are to be permitted by the Boss.
— Outsiders are to be questioned and put under watch until proven loyal to the Badlands. This is because of tensions with other groups and concerns over foreign spies/assassins.
— Dual-alliances are not encouraged in the least (ICly), but are possible if kept a secret

GOODS & SERVICES
As we are mafia-based group, we offer goods as well as services to those willing to pay in exchange. Depending on what you want, you can pay in jewels, food, resources, and whatever else you can think of. We will take any customer, from loners to whole groups or individuals from neutral/allied groups.

liquor: our drinks are usually stolen from merchants or brewed by the badlanders themselves. sold in full cases, packs, and single bottles.
drugs: these are perhaps the priciest items that we have, considering the scarcity of narcotics. scavenged from pharmacies and abandoned homes, we have drugs for medical and recreational use on the market. we also grow, in which a few types of drugs can be made from these plants.
hitmen: the badlanders specialize in murder. if you need someone "taken care of", you can hire us to do the dirty work.
weapons: from daggers to swords to axes, we can provide you with weapons. the orders may take a day to a week to complete.

HIERARCHY
THE BOSS is the head of the group and has the power to order anything from anyone in the Badlands. The Boss makes all the important decisions, much like an owner of a company would. They are usually greatly respected and widely feared by their subordinates.

THE UNDERBOSS is the second-in-command in the hierarchy. They are ready to stand in for the Boss at any given moment. The Underboss can easily find themselves at the helm of the group, so they are groomed for eventual leadership. They have most of the same powers that the Boss has (accepting newcomers, handing out punishments), though not full authority unless given by the Boss.

THE CAPOREGIMES, also known as the Capos, are captains within the Badlands. They head the Guards and the Soldiers and can order them to do anything. They make sure that their subordinates are trained and prepared for upcoming missions. The Capos report directly to the Boss or Underboss, who hand down the instructions. They can issue punishments or warnings if needed and they may also give out tasks for the lower ranks to do.

THE GUARDS are trusted Soldiers who have proved their worth in the Badlands. They are recognized for their brains, loyalty, and strength. They are generally seen as higher authoritative figures in the ranking system that should be respected and listened to, though they still do not have the same permissions as their superiors do. They train under the Caporegimes and are expected to help them enforce authority within the Badlands.

THE SOLDIERS are the regular members of the hierarchy. They are the grunts of the group who do the majority of the work and demonstrate their loyalty to the Badlands, protecting the Badlands at all costs. They generally stick out their necks in the hope of making a name for themselves.
THE NOVIOZO is a term used to people staying in the Badlands who haven't been made full members by initiation yet. This is the lowest rank in the hierarchy. They will be referred to as a noviozo until they have taken the oath under the leader.

TITLES
HEART is rewarded to those who take the time to welcome newcomers and show them the ways of the Badlands. They are recognized for their friendliness and helpfulness.
SPADE is rewarded to individuals with big ideas. They are constantly coming up with ways to help the Badlands and often choose to use their brain over their brawn.
DIAMOND is rewarded to Badlanders who have proved their loyalty time and time again. They are the most trusted by the Boss and are to be respected.
CLUB is rewarded to people who take the time to strategize and militarize. They favor brawn over brains and is well-versed in battle tactics.
MEDIC is bestowed upon individuals who exert talent in the medical field. They are trusted to tend to injuries and organize the medical stock.
DAUNTLESS is rewarded to contestants in OOC-based events such as one-shot contests, development challenges, etc.

TRADITIONS & CUSTOMS
NEWCOMER INITIATION CEREMONY is held by the Boss when a newcomer officially pledges their loyalty to the Badlands. First, the new recruit is led into the presence of other members and presented to the Boss; the ways of the Badlands are explained including its laws and codes. Then, the recruit's finger is cut with a blade; a few drops of blood are spilled on a playing card. The card is set on fire (to symbolize the pain that the inductee would go through for the group); finally, the card is juggled in the inductee's hand until it burns up. The Boss then makes a closing remark and concludes the ceremony.
— This ceremony does not apply to characters who have been apart of the group prior to Charlie's leadership (October 2017)
— Your character cannot be promoted until they take the oath and become a full member.
— If there are multiple newcomers wishing to pledge their allegiance, then their ceremonies will be combined into one.
— Although it is required for new arrivals to go through a ceremony to gain full membership, you as the roleplayer do not have to make a full post on the ceremony thread (you may type up something quick or track it, saying your character was present).

BANQUETS are held when there is a reason to celebrate. It's not every day that the Badlanders get together in their fanciest attire and feasts and dances, so it is truly the special occasion. Whether a successful raid or fishing season is being celebrated, it's a fun time for everybody. At times, the leader may even decide to host a visiting group to celebrate a partnership between the both of them.

FOREIGN RELATIONSHIPS
The Badlands are generally neutral with all groups but can make enemies due to a) the other group attacking them and b) the other group being weak and easy to take advantage of. They are open to alliances or truces to avoid bloodshed and also to form a business-like partnership, but they can snap partnerships off as easily as they agree to them. The main goal of the Badlands is to be respected and to accumulate as many resources as they can, so raids on enemies and even neutrals can be expected. Foreign relations can change suddenly at any time, so keep this in mind while seeking an alliance.

β€” niara is almost the spitting image of her mother, although pieces of her father's genes can be noticed in simple details here and there. she's tall and thin, but has strong muscles, which aren't too visible unless you're looking closely. she's about 5'7 or 5'8 in height. her skin is a medium olive tone, inherited from her mother, who is of armenian descent. she's struggled with acne before and still sometimes does, although not as frequently. as a result, her face has scars from it, but she doesn't really seem to care. her dark chestnut brown hair is usually kept in a ponytail, and she's often seen sporting a dark hoodie or leather jacket, along with a light t-shirt of some kind beneath. she often wears skinny jeans or tights, but sometimes she'll wear sweatpants, and only owns one pair of shoes which are black and white sneakers that she's had for years. only rarely is she seen wearing makeup, and that's usually only a little bit, for events and parties. her eyes are big and dark brown in colour, although in the light there are golden hues that bounce off her irises.

β€” niara is often suspicious of others' motives, and keeps her circle incredibly close because of her distrust of others. she's family-oriented, and while she loves her father and her siblings, it will take a long time for them all to gain her trust. her twin brother, however, is her one and only 100% confidant, the one person she trusts with everything- including her own life. she is fierce and is completely willing and capable to start fights or finish them. she can be pretty judgmental, usually silently, but if she feels its important, she'll speak her mind, something she's never been afraid to do. she is possessive, almost scarily so- and incredibly hostile whenever someone so much as looks at one of her siblings or friends wrong. they may all be half-siblings, but they're still her blood, and she'll fight for them.
